Jack didn't have a whole lot of friends. If he was honest he really didn't have any friends. Not in real life at least. People often ignored him, they didn't like the odd vibe he had, the mixture of low self confidence and abysmal social awareness. He wasn't hideously ugly but was certainly on the poor looking side. All of it made for a real negative combination.
Jack wasn't completely stupid though, at least when it came to book smarts. No genius of course but someone who could actually complete college. Since real life social interaction wasn't going well he had taken out student loans and found a small apartment away from campus and took only internet courses. He was proceeding along OK from a grade standpoint, passing most of his classes. But he was lonely, very lonely.
He took solace in on-line games. He found a group of people who played similar games and managed to get on a Discord sever with them. It hadn't been hard since it was an open sign up and soon he started to play with a few people. To his astonishment a girl was on the server by the name of Kim. Jack rarely interacted with people but girls were even less frequent for him. He quickly established himself to be an awkward creeper even though he had no creepy intentions!
Kim's boyfriend was Daniel and quickly picked up on it and told him off. Jack quickly apologized, fearful of losing even the small tenuous bonds he had formed so far.
Kim interjected, "We'll let you stay on the server for now, just don't be too annoying."
Since then Jack had been quiet and tried to play with them any chance he got. They were decent at games and had similar gaming interests and for once Jack was making bonds with people his age. It was a heady experience, even if he was constantly insulted and mocked by Daniel. Kim's laughter at Daniel's insults was music to his ears even if was directed at him. He really enjoyed the sound of her voice. It was almost enchanting to him.
