go for a swim. The day was hot, the sun beat down relentlessly, and the water looked cool. She was certain a swim would be just the thing to cool down.
She walked to the water's edge. Not far away, she could see a small metal float, bobbing gently in the water at the edge of the swimming area. That would be her target.
Jesse stepped back a short distance, then ran into surface. She kept running until she could no longer feel the sand under her feet. At that point, she began swimming with powerful strokes.
Jessie swam to the float, enjoying the feel of the cool, clear water on her completely naked body as she did so. No clammy bikini here.
The float was further out than she had expected it to be. She climbed aboard and sat down on top of it.
After a few moments, she lay down on it. She closed her eyes. She fell asleep.
Jessie slept for a fair while. When she woke up, the sky was darker, and the sun had moved well down the horizon. She had been sleeping for several hours.
She slipped over the side of the float and swam back to the beach.
She had been aware of the flashing lights, but didn't think anything of them until she was ready to walk back onto the beach. Then she realized what the flashing red and blue lights were. They were the lights from patrol cars.
Jessie slowly swam backwards several dozen yards, until she was certain she couldn't be spotted from the shore. She watched the raid play out.
She counted twenty patrol cars and wagons, and forty or fifty cops. They were rounding up everyone and loading them into the backs of paddy wagons. They also seemed to be picking up unattended towels and things from the beach.
Jessie stayed in the surf until the last police car was gone. Then she waited a while longer before she swam out of the surf and walked back onto the beach.
She went directly to the spot where she had left her bikini and her beach bag. It was gone. The police must have picked it up.
Desperately, Jessie looked around the beach. It was empty. No towels, no bags, not even any trash. And she was alone on it.
Alone, completely naked, and, she realized with some fear, a long way from her apartment. She was going to have to walk ten miles like this, possibly twelve.
Just beyond the parking lot was a road. She could hitchhike, she thought, or walk home.
