Furious with Daphne, Heather yells, "I'll get you for this! I swear!", even as she runs in a panic down the sidewalk and away from the approaching police sirens. She has to stop and hide more than once from cars passing by, their drivers apparently too intent on multitasking as they make their way to work to notice her.
Realizing that if she goes straight, she'll arrive at Oakwood Avenue, which is always starting to get busy with traffic at this early hour of the day, Heather scampers around the corner to Valley Drive. Just as she does so, a car with a couple of high-school-aged boys see her and roll down their window to make catcalls and whistle at her, but she doesn't ever break her pace as she runs around the corner, almost running right into little old Mr. McAllister, out walking his pet pekinese poodle, which immediately starts yapping at her. For his part, the old man emits a surprised, "Oh, my!".
Sprinting still further, Heather finally gets a little luck as she sees a police car speeding through the intersection she just left behind, apparently not seeing her in the glare of the rising sun.
Heather turns yet another corner, which, if she doesn't run into more trouble, should put her only a couple of blocks from her house...but then she hears the sirens sounding closer again! "They must have come back and spoken to old Mr. McAllister. Rats!", she thinks.
Ahead, Heather sees a school bus parked in the driveway of Mrs. Young, the bus driver. She also sees the Golf Course across the street and knows that the woods to her left have a nature trail, part of one of the town's parks.
