This choice: "...change a pony's gender." • Go Back... Spike was left blinking at that. "So...wait a minute. You're telling me you can turn a mare into a stallion?"
Twilight blushed, but nodded. "That's it exactly. I designed the spell to make things easier for same-gender couples who want a kid of their own, but don't want to adopt."
Spike nodded slowly. "I guess that sounds reasonable...But have you tested it yet?"
"Well, yes," Twilight replied, "I did some tests on some of Fluttershy's animals...with her permission, of course! I changed them for a few minutes, then changed them back."
"Good to know it's reversible," Spike said with a nod. "But...wait, have you even tried this on ponies yet?"
"Um...well, yes. I tried it on one pony, after asking her permission. By the way, you might want to avoid Lyra and BonBon's house in the near future."
Spike blanched. "I did NOT need to know that, Twi! I mean, okay, they're a cute couple, but seriously!"
"Sorry, but you did ask," the unicorn reminded him.
"Right...Note to self: never ask about Twilight's spells again."
Twilight rolled her eyes at the behavior of her assistant, and began packing for the trip to Canterlot. She had kept silent about her true motives behind developing the spell, however. Maybe with this spell, I can be with her...

When Twilight arrived at Canterlot, her first stop was her old library. She dropped Spike off there, and asked him to take a few books from here that the Ponyville library didn't have. In the meantime, she set off to find Princess Celestia. It didn't take her too long; the princess was currently relaxing in her bedchambers.
"Ah, Twilight! I'm glad you made it," Celestia said, rising to her forehooves from the cushion she'd been lying down on.
"I'm always ready to answer a summons, Princess," Twilight replied with a bow.
The alicorn chuckled. "Twilight, there's no need to be so formal. Here, in this room, it's just you and me. We can speak freely about anything you wish to speak about."
Twilight managed to hide a blush at what she'd REALLY like to talk about, and coughed. "Well, in your letter, you said you were interested in the spell I was developing, right?"
"Indeed, although you still haven't told me what it does," Celestia replied.
"Well, it's...for lack of a better phrase, it's a gender-swapping spell. I can use it to change somepony from one gender to the other and back," Twilight explained. "I've already tested it out, and it seems to work rather well."
Celestia's eyebrows rose clear up to the forelock of her mane. "I see...and have you thought about the possible long-term consequences for keeping somepony as the other gender?"
Twilight nodded. "I thought about the hormone imbalance that could result, so I came up with a solution. The spell not only changes the body, but the hormones currently in the body as well. Estrogen becomes testosterone, and vice versa."
"Hm...it sounds like you've put some thought into this, my faithful student," Celestia mused. "But why so much work on this one spell?"
"Well, like I told Spike, I designed it for same-gender couples who want a kid, but don't want to adopt," Twilight explained. "It's easily reversible, too. Though, I haven't learned what would happen if I used it on somepony who was pregnant. And I don't think I'd care to find out."
"Nor would I," Celestia agreed with a shiver. Then her features smoothed into a mask of perfect neutrality. "Are you sure this has nothing to do with your crush on me?"
Twilight's brain shut down at that, as she stared wide-eyed and open-mouthed at her mentor. Her jaw worked, but nothing came out. Inwardly, her thoughts were going a mile a minute. Ohmigoshohmigoshohmigosh she knows I'm so stupid of course she knows she knows everything but why didn't she say anything -
Seeing her student's dumbfounded expression, Celestia smiled. "I've known for some time what your true feelings for me were. I never confronted you about them because, well, I was honestly flattered. Hardly anypony is brave enough to talk to me face to face, let alone wear their heart in the open around me."
Twilight blinked, and her jaw closed. "You mean...you're not upset?"
"Twilight, why would I be upset?" the alicorn asked, reaching over to draw Twilight into a hug. "Like I said, I find it flattering that I can still draw romantic interest from somepony...even if said pony is my student."
Twilight melted into the hug, and eagerly returned it. "Well...in that case, you found me out, Princess. I did develop this spell for the two of us. It sounds a bit presumptuous, but...well, I've been head-over-hooves for you almost since becoming your student. I just...had this feeling, deep in my heart, that we would be together one day." She looked up into Celestia's eyes, which were...   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
