Chapter #6

Botany can expand your horizons

You enter the greenhouse and it actually smells kind of nice, not that the rest of the station doesn't, the rest of the station does actually have much of a smell. Anyway, making your way through the foliage is a rather strange feeling for someone who grew up in space. The cool leaves on your skin makes you jump at first, but soon you get used to it.

"Can I help you?" A voice comes from behind some flower bushes

"I'm the new service technician, and I just looking around before my first day tomorrow." you reply

"Oh! Awesome!" the voice perks up, it reveals itself to be the woman you saw through the window, she's about your height, and has very full lips. "I'm Brianna, the botanist for this lab." she puts her hand out and you shake it gently.

"Only one?"

"Pretty much, the job is not too hard, just have to come in and check on the plants every day." she smiles at you, "Do you like plants?"

"I've never seen so many at once before." you replied, looking around the room again before meeting her gaze.

"Yea, a lot of spacers say that, I grew up on a colony so it was all plants and farming when I was little, the industrialization came after. Almost killed the native species, actually. It's why I became a botanist, and why I work this lab. All these plants are native to my homeworld."

"All these? There are so many!"

"This is only a fraction, really, just the endangered ones." she giggles. "These flowering bushes are my favorites, I've never seen them bloom before, but my research says it should be quite the occasion. Then there are these little berry bushes, I've never seen yellow berries before, and my dad said to never eat them, though toxicology reports have shown they're harmless. Anyway, my last plant in here are these vine plants," she motions to a trellis engulfed in vines, "they have these pods full of some kind of slurry, that is also non-toxic, but colonists were also weary of consuming."

"Did they ever say why?"

"No, they didn't. I guess they thought I was too young to understand, or telling me what it did would encourage me to seek it out to eat."

"You've never tried them?"

"No, I want to... but I don't know. What if something is present that hasn't been detected, or some kind of native bacteria?"

"Only one way to find out." you remark to her. She purses her lips and looks at her collection of plants.

"You're right, if you take notes I'll get started." Brianna hands you a tablet and prepares one of the plants.
