As the nurse helps you to roll back in bed, and restore your modesty pulling up the sheets, a wave of calming warmth ripples through your body. You feel the nervousness about being a test subject ease, and fade to nothing.
"Oooo, I think it's working already." you coo softly.
She nods and smiles, "It can be quick."
Enjoying her smile, and those perfect teeth, you want to draw out the conversation. Just to listen to her voice, her soothing voice, and see that happy face. Her English is incredibly good, but still delivered with a cute Japanese-accented edge. You shrug and snuggle into the cosy bed, it is to be expected, as you are in Tokyo.
"How... How does it work..." you blurt out.
Memories of the film '28 Days Later' re-surface. It's only a film, but you remember vaguely, that was meant to be caused by a rage suppressing drug.
Sitting down, she pats your hand, and starts talking.
"It blocks the receptors for testosterone in the brain, blocking your ability to get agitated, nervous, then angry."
She looks at the ceiling as if distracted for a moment, then when she restarts, her voice sounds croaky and old.
"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering..."
A snorting laugh slips out, as you recognise the quote from Yoda. Unbelievably she just became a little cuter. Her smile genuine, and reminiscent of a chipmunk.
"So we also replace them with female hormones, to regulate your body. We've also found certain changes in the brain direct thoughts in more tranquil paths. A different perspective... a more Eastern, more Japanese perspective, rather than a Western, I'm in charge, I'm in control type of personality."
"Oh.." you answer. Your answer already softer, more accepting.
"So do you have any other questions?"
You do, but oddly you feel yourself holding back. You don't want to bother her, perhaps it's simply your imagination, what does that mean you can expect next...
