Sam was a girl Dan's same age, and she was pretty much his best friend ever. He found her at the park with a homemade kite made out of newspaper and plywood.
"Hey, Dan," she said with a smile. "You're up before noon. Should I be worried?"
"You might," he admitted. "Hey, if you could have one wish, what would it be?" Dan figured that if he had unlimited power, he might as well let his friends share the benefits.
"One wish?" Sam asked. She closed her eyes. "Let me think. I'd wish for it to be a bright, sunny day where I could fly my kite." She opened her eyes and looked around in mock surprise. "Wow! It worked! But seriously, what's the point of wishing for stuff you can't have? Life as it is is pretty fantastic already."
"Well, I can't argue with that," Dan admitted, fairly content with how his morning had been going so far. "But don't you ever wish that..."
