Chapter #1

Another door opens...

    by: Enigma Author IconMail Icon
It's nighttime at the museum, and instead of having fun at a great party with Jason, your best friend, you're spending the long, intimate hours with a dumpster. The curator wanted a bunch of old exhibits removed or destroyed (to make room for a boring and pointless highlight of mold) and the employee who was slated for this honor was fired earlier for "conduct of gross indecency" in the curator's office (as well as his secretary). Naturally, you were dumb enough to answer your cellphone when he called, causing an abrupt change in your plans for Friday night. The only reason you even had this job was to save up money to go to college since the scholarship committee shafted you.

The armful of bogus meteorite rocks, from an exhibit for children, scratch your arms as you finally dump the last load for the night. You slump against the brick wall, and rest your exhausted body from the extra work it had to do from cleaning all the glass cases your co-worker neglected to do. If anyone could see you now, no one would recognize your medium build with brown hair and blue eyes under all the dust, shredded paper, and cuts. A long sigh escapes your mouth as you think of the wasted time you could have had at the party. You pull out your phone to text Jason, to see if there is any chance of meeting him later but you read a message from him that says, "OMG the party was unbelievable and I scored a chick tonight! Sorry u weren't here. Later!"

Anger at the unfair universe dealing you a bum hand builds up inside you; the phone starts trembling in your hand and you put it away before anything bad happens to it. You see one of the fake meteorites laying on the ground, and stoop to pick up before throwing it at the dumpster with a satisfying BAM! The meteorite shatters and despite your orneriness, you notice a strange object bouncing on the ground amid the pieces. Walking over and picking it up, you notice that it looks a lot like an oval-shaped stone with a smooth surface, and has a faint glow of Dark Cyan. As you look at it closer, faint symbols and shapes appear before glinting at you and disappearing. You realize that the meteorite must have been a real one, since all the pieces on the ground are made of rock and not plastic. Shaking your head, you say to yourself, "Damn, I must be even more exhausted than I thought, if I'm starting to believe that meteorites can contain perfect stones in them. I wish I wasn't so tired." The stone flashes and stops glowing for a moment before it resumes; moreover, you suddenly feel so energetic, you could run all the way home. You decide that your tiredness has you confused, so you dust yourself off, retrieve your belongings, and lock the service door on your way to your car.

After getting in and hearing the engine turn over once, before dying permanently, you bang the steering column with the stone in your hand and mutter, "Please don't do this to me!" The car roars to life as the stone flashes in your hand again before the glow level dips and rises. You figure out that the stone's actions are related to both incidents when you desired for them. You test this theory by wishing in your head for you to be clean and watch the stone flash once again before all the trash and sweat on you vanishes. An elated feeling of amazement fills you up like a balloon and you squash the temptation of testing it out further before you get home.

You walk into your house and notice the light in the study is lit before you run upstairs to examine the stone in private; Mom must be up late again, checking over the account books. You usually stop in to wish her goodnight, but the stone is burning a hole in your pocket. What to do?
