We find our heroes at the beach on beautiful Cinnabar island! Recovering after a blazing, eruptive battle with Blaine, the Cinnabar gym leader, Misty and Brock are relaxing with their pokemon in the sun. But Ash has other plans in mind!
"Come on guys! Let's get going to Viridian City!" Ash whines, still dressed in his sneakers, signature blue jeans, jacket, and trademark Pokemon League baseball cap. His shadow looms over Misty, who tips her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose and frowns at the boy interrupting her tan.
"What's the rush, Ash? We can't leave the island today anyways. The next ship destined for Viridian doesn't leave until tomorrow!" She replies.
The aspiring pokemon master groans. "Awww! How am I supposed to train out here on the beach with all these tourists around?"
Misty sits up and straightens out her red hair, which she untied to let roll down past her shoulders for once. The occasional sea spray keeping her hair damp and full. She is wearing her favourite bikini today, a two-piece number she bought while shopping in Celadon City. Sifting through her backpack lying next to her beach chair, she offers, "You can train with Starmie if you'd like. With your Squirtle, they make a pretty good sparring duo!" She giggles.
"That's more like it!" Ash cries, twisting his baseball cap backwards and reaching into his belt for a miniaturized pokeball. "Go, Squirtle!"
A few seconds later, the red light emanating from the pokeball materializes into Squirtle, the baby blue turtle pokemon. Misty sends her Starmie out, and they begin trading punches (or kicks, depending on your view of Starmie's starfish-like appendages) in front of them.
"All right! How about you, Brock?" Ash looks over to an empty beach chair next to Misty, its towel rustled up and slightly sandy. "Brock?" Scanning the horizon for signs of their other friend, they eventually locate the young man. Gobsmacked over an Officer Jenny patrolling the boardwalk nearby.
Heartshapes dancing around Brock's octagonal head, he blushes a brighter red than a Magikarp and drools at Jenny. "Ooooh! Are you the Jenny of Cinnabar Island?"
"Why yes I am!" Officer Jenny replies matter-of-factly, not paying much attention to Brock as she keeps her eyes on the beachgoers. She is straddling her motorcycle at the moment, with Brock standing in her way. She adjusts her cap and replies, "How did you know that?"
Brock slobbers, "Oh, I've seen the Jenny in Lavender Town and you're way way WAY prettier than her by far! There's no comparison whatsoever!"
Jenny's lips curve into a faint smile, trying not to let Brock's compliment go to her head too much. "Aww, thank you! She's my cousin."
Before Brock can say any more, he lurches backward and yelps in pain. Misty is pinching his ears and begins dragging him back to his beach chair. "Can't you see they're all the same! Stupid boys..." She grumbles, not listening to Brock's pleading of how this Jenny is so much different and better than the others.
"Hello Officer Jenny!" Ash approaches and waves at her. "What's up?"
"Chaaa!" Pikachu, always by Ash's side, pit-pats over and bobs its ears up.
"You cute little thing!" Jenny says, dismounting from her motorcycle to kneel down and pet Pikachu on the head. "It's always good to see trainers here on Cinnabar! Your Pikachu looks pretty strong!"
"Pi-kachu pi pi..." Pikachu closes its eyes as it enjoys being petted.
Ash laughs. "Yep! But it was my Charizard who helped me win this!" He shows Jenny the inside of his jacket. Sown on the inside hem are seven gym badges, the newest one being the ruby-red Volcanobadge gleaming in the hot sun.
"That's a Volcanobadge!" Jenny exclaims and congratulates Ash. She rubs her chin with a gloved hand. "You know, I can't be everywhere on the island at once. I'm sure you wouldn't mind looking out for suspicious activity, would you?"
"Suspicious activity?" Probes Ash.
"That's right. We're on high alert for suspicious individuals we've heard are prowling around the island. Eyewitnesses say they're members of the notorious gang Team Rocket! There are three of them, so be on the lookout!" Jenny explains.
"Three of them," Repeats Ash. His eyes flash in a moment of clarity. "Would one of them happen to be a Meowth by chance? And the other two about this tall," He raises his hands above his head, "And the man has purple-ish hair, the woman has long maroon hair?" Ash imitating his long-time rivals from Team Rocket. Jessie, James, and the English-speaking pokemon, Meowth.
Jenny places her hands on her hips. "Well, I'm impressed! How do you know so much about these individuals?"
Ash laughs, "Oh, them? They've been trying to steal Pikachu for months! They're complete losers, you'll have no trouble stopping them!"
She smiles, getting back onto her motorcycle and revving the engine. "Thanks for the tip, kid! In the mean time, let me know if you see them!" She notices a skateboarder passing her recklessly on the road. Crying out, "Hey! Walking only on the boardwalk! Come back here!" Jenny speeds away.
"I guess it's not easy living for everybody!" Ash chuckles, placing his hands behind his head in typical anime-pose and walking back to the beach. "Maybe a few hours at the beach won't hurt. Plus, I think we've earned it after winning that badge! Whattya say, Pikachu?"
"Pika-Chu!" Pikachu chirps, now wearing mini-sunglasses and holding a tiny glass of orange soda with a straw and a plastic umbrella.
