"Did you hear that?" She asked. "Yeah! What the heck was that all about? " "Well, obviously your new story branch didn't fit into the moderator's idea of how things should start out." "Story?"I asked , "What story? This isn't a story!" "Oh boy! Another thick headed human! You, fella, are a character in a story being written by some repressed psyche old dude sitting in a dumpy house all alone and are you going to sit there and let that tarantula bite your ass?" As soon as that soaked in, I lept up and spun about frantically looking for the spider. "WHERE...WHERE IS IT!?!" I hate spiders! I couldn't see any spider in the darkness so I hopped up onto the porch swing. I realized I had been had whenever I heard her hysterical laughing barely muffled! "No spider?" "Nope" she said "Now that your off your butt, we need to go to the lab." Stepping down from the swing, I asked her, "I Lab? What lab? What the heck kinda place is this?" She turned and began to walk away, explaining as she went. " Ok dummy, come on and I'll explain. This isn't really a ranch and I'm not really a dog. Bill (the owner) isn't really a retired science teacher and your not really a very good writer." "HEY! That's not fair!"I I exclaimed, "I'm just new at it!" "Yeah! It shows! I think you kust got carried away and wrote about your personal experiences with your own Pyrenees girl." "NO!"I blurted "I didn't .....that's illegal! And OUCH!" I had stepped off the porch as we were talking and got a painful reminder that I'm barefooted! "Damn! These gravels are sharp! Let me go get some shoes" "No, just ride me" she said as she moved next to me. "Uh..ride you? But.." I "But what?" she snapped "I out weigh you and it's not all fur! Now get on my back, my paw pads are tougher than leather."I did as she told me and was surprised when my weight did phase her a bit. She began to walk across the gravely parking area towards the barn. Feeling the soft silky fur and powerful muscles moving under her hide as she effortlessly carried me, I wondered out loud, "What kind of creature are you?" I was a bit spooked by her reply. " I'm canine 71 series 5. But you can find me faster on the inventory as Rebecca. I'm a biological creation of Bill's new invention, the ProtoPrinter. Now be still." We had reached the barn door. She balanced on three legs and lifted her paw up and touched a spot on the doorframe. A loud nuzz and click startled me then the door opened with a slight hiss. "What the hell!"I exclaimed as she carried me inside. "This isn't really a barn. It's a hidden laboratory. Bill is what you writers might call a mad scientist. He's really a sweet guy though." The lights came on and I could see we were in an odd lab of sorts. Imagine a computer room crossed with an exploded plumbing store. Yeah, kinda like that! "What sort of weird stuff goes on in here?"I asked, forgetting I was still riding a huge dog! "Computer! "she shouted. A soft "bing" sounded. "Computer, start upload scan file Rebecca. " (working) it replied "Hey! I know that voice!"I blurted. "Uh huh. Bills a trekkie. Now as much as I enjoy you on my back, get off me. I've got to upload myself before this body dissolves. " I had noticed she was feeling kinda sweaty, but ...dissolving? I did as she asked. She walked over next to a desk with a computer terminal on it and a strange hood like apparatus mounted on a robotic arm. "I won't be myself after the scan. My body will go to that tank of proto jelly over there and jump in. I'll be back on the computer. Hey computer! (bing!) Keep file Rebecca open for user interaction." ( affirmative)
It answered. The hood lowered over her head and a blue glow came from under it. In a moment it, lifted. Her merry big brown eyes were dead looking, like a corpse or zombie as her body walked to the floor level tank. "Becks!"I shouted, no response. As she walked out on the surface of the odd jelly, it moved under her paws like a big water bed mattress. "REBECCA!"I Yelled. She paused, then curled around like any dog would when about to sleep, then she laid down. Her lifeless eyes closed and her form began to spread out like a sagging water balloon and she sunk below the surface of the thick liquid. "REBECCAAAAAAA!"I cried out. "Over here stupid!" Her voice was coming from the terminal speaker! I ran to it and whispered "Is it really you? What happened? "Yeah, it's me." Her voice sounded odd coming from the little speakers. " Our bodies only last about 2 weeks, then we have to print a new one. But our little fun on the porch swing wore mine out just a bit early! I need a bit of down time to recuperate before I can be printed again, so I'm giving you user access to all the menu options in the computer. Have fun honey, but be careful what you ask it for!" Then the screen went dark a moment. "Becca?"I whispered, nothing. The screen lit up with a menu of options under a brief chapter. Reading it, I was shocked to find out what it meant. I could create any animal in the menus and add all sorts of options and the computer would build it from the tank of protoplasm in about an hour! Feeling like a mad scientist now, I looked over the options and choose.....
