"Wait isn't that a good thing?"
Dr. Lowers shook his head before continuing.
"No, Bryan, because we can't discern a cause. He should have taken several hours, if not days, to recover from his injuries. Yet right now, he's in perfect condition. Not only that, but Brendan was a Type One Diabetic. You heard me right, was. Brendan's pancreas is producing insulin as if it were always functioning normally. Bryan, that's a medical impossibility."
I couldn't believe it. Type One Diabetes didn't have a cure back then. Individuals that had it needed to administer insulin to themselves several times a day. That fact that Brendan was now cured was impossible. Dr. Lowers let the news settle in with me, then resumed.
"But like I said, we can't tell what caused this. Logic would dictate this vial of strange liquid is the cause, but we don't have a sample to analyze. So right now, we simply need to watch him and hope something comes up that can help us figure this out."
"Like what?"
"Honestly, no idea. But you don't need to worry about that. I will be taking care of his health in the future, so I just need you to do what I say.
"What do I need to do?"
"Since there is nothing medically wrong with Brendan, we are going to send him with you back to your dorm room. He isn't going to have any medications or anything he needs to do differently. I just need you to watch him, and call me if he develops any symptoms. I want to literally anything going on with Brendan that's unusual. Emotionally, behaviorally, physically, anything. I'd rather you report too much than not enough. Any information could be important, since we know nothing right now. Got it?"
"Uh, yeah, shouldn't be hard. But what about when he's not nearby? Like during classes and such?"
"You need to try to stay with him as much as you can. If possible, you both should head out to do things together. Once classes start for you two, which won't happen for a few weeks, I don't know. We'll cross that bridge when we get there."
"Okay. Can I see him now then?"
"Oh, yes, of course. I'll take you there now."
I walked down white walkways while Dr. Lowers went with. It took a minute before entering the room. Brendan was lying on the hospital bed, looking infinitely better than when I first saw him. He was lazily watching something on the TV in the room. Glancing at the two of us, he reached for the remote and turned off the TV.
"Hey Dr. Lowers. Who's this?"
"Brendan, this is Bryan, the one who made sure you got here."
"Oh, heh, kind of an awkward introduction, huh? Well, I'm glad you came when you did. I wouldn't be here otherwise..."
"Don't worry about it Brendan. Anyone else would've done the same."
"Yeah..."
"So, Brendan, after medical consultation, I've deemed there's nothing else we can do for you. You can go back to your dorm. The only thing I need you to do is stick with Bryan so he can report any symptoms you are experiencing to me right away."
"What? Why can't I do it?"
"Because outside observers can notice them easier. And if it isn't observable, you can just tell Bryan. Plus, in case something were to happen, it's better if someone who knows what's going on is with you."
"Fine. Oh, I meant no offense Bryan. I just don't want to be stuck with anyone all day every day."
"Brendan, it's fine. Let's just get going."
"Yes, if I can."
"Yes, Brendan, you are discharged."
After some final paperwork and getting Dr. Lowers number, Brendan and I went back to our dorm room, with me driving. About half way there, Brendan spoke up.
"Bryan, I think we got off on the wrong foot. I think we should reintroduce ourselves. You agree?
"Yeah, sounds like a good idea. You can start."
"Actually, I was hoping you would. I'm terrible with introductions, clearly."
"Sure, but first, I really wanted to ask. What happened to you? Like, how did you end up with that vial stuck in you."
"The doctors didn't tell you? I honestly don't remember. I remember unpacking in the dorm room, then waking up in the hospital. That's it."
"I guess that's why they didn't tell me, there was nothing to say."
"Yeah. Anyway, your introduction."
"Right, right. Hi, I'm Bryan. You must be Brendan."
"Yeah, I'm Brendan. I didn't expect you to be so tall."
"Didn't I tell you I was 6' 3"?"
"Yeah, you did, but I'm only two inches shorter than you, yet you still look so tall in comparison."
"I get that from a lot of people. So, are you almost done unpacking?"
"Yeah, I don't have much with me. You?"
"I actually have all my unpacking done already."
"Really, already?"
"Yep, I had very little to bring too."
"Well, at least we'll have plenty of space."
"Exactly. Oh, looks like we're here."
Brendan and I got out of the car and went back to room #317. He finished unpacking things in just a few minutes. Afterwards, he...
