Chapter #5

Discovery

The walk back was only a few minutes, but it passed by a few hidden streets along the way. The town was generally clean and safe enough, but few people bothered to remember where the back streets ended and began. Cutting through them always saved you a couple of minutes, and you never ran into trouble.

However, this time, you had to stop along the way. Something had caught your eye, and you paused as you thought you could spot something lying behind a dumpster. You could only make out the head of it, but it seemed as though there was a Doberman hiding behind it. You slowed down a little bit as you approached. It was hard to see, but you didn't spot a collar on it. If the dog was a stray, then you didn't want to get too close. However, you noticed that its eyes seemed to be drooping, and that it seemed half-asleep. You quietly approached, planning on walking by, hoping you could make it without any incident.

The creature didn't seem to move as you approach. You let out a sigh of relief, thankful that the dog seemed to be relaxed. However, as you passed the dumpster and got a full view of the creature, you had to stop. Your eyes widened as you spotted the limbs on the creature, clearly longer and stretched out a bit. His body was in decent shape, and his fur was short, but it definitely wasn't a normal dog.

You're about to speak before noticing his hand held firmly over his chest. You nervously move your hand closer, a little afraid of making contact. You gently lift his hand up, trying to take a look at what he was covering. His hand was odd, still furry but like a human's. However, your attention quickly went to the wound he had on his body. Though it was red and bloodied, there seemed to be very little still coming from it. However, the fact that the Doberman didn't react meant that he wasn't in very good condition.

You swallow, a little uncertain of what to do. However, you didn't want to leave him outside. You carefully tried to shift him a little bit. You saw his eyes suddenly snap open, and half-expected him to lunge at you. However, he only managed a weak growl. You hesitate for a moment, but quickly make up your mind. Without giving him a moment to do more, you just pick him up quickly, doing your best to not move him too suddenly. "Come on... It's going to rain soon, and you shouldn't stay out here." Though you feel him struggling a little, it only takes a few moments before he seems to give up, his body leaning into yours. He was heavier than you expected, but you managed to hold him steady over your shoulder as you tried your best to carry him back.

You were just grateful that there was only a short distance back home, and you didn't encounter anybody on the way. It would've been a huge problem to try to explain the situation, and you were just glad to bring him in quickly. You laid him down on your couch when you arrived, and got your first aid kit out, doing your best to patch his wound up. He winced as you cleaned it and disinfected it, but was clearly too exhausted to do anything else. It took a fair amount of time, but you finally managed to get him bandaged up.

You sighed and sat on the floor as you finished. Now that the anthro was taken care of, you had a chance to rest, but the break meant gave your thoughts a chance to fully hit you. Here you were, with an injured anthro resting on your couch. You had no idea how to react, and you had no idea what had happened to the guy. For all you knew, he could've been a convict or something. However, you couldn't bear the idea of leaving him alone in human lands. It just seemed like a bad idea, and you thought you could at least keep him while he recovered. Whatever the reason was, it didn't seem right to leave him outside and injured.

You sighed as you stood up. You couldn't keep your eyes on him all the time, and your stomach was constantly reminding you that it was time for food. You considered making something for the anthro, but had no idea what he would eat, or when he would be awake and able to eat. You sighed and just began cooking something simple. It didn't take long before you had a small plate of food.

However, you heard a soft growl from the couch. You stood up suddenly, only to see the dog trying to get up. You heard a soft growling, and quickly rushed over to him. "Easy! You're still badly hurt..."

He glared at you, snarling and trying to lunge at you, but wincing as he moved. You quickly held his arm, and just helped him sit up on your couch. "Look, just rest, okay? You can do whatever you want after you're better, but if you try now, you're just going to make it worse!"

He kept moving a little, but after a few weak shakes, he just sighed, looking down at the ground. He seemed resigned to it, and quietly sat on the couch, looking at the ground. You sat down next to him, a little uncomfortable with speaking at the moment. You simply sat there, not sure how to best break the silence. However, as the seconds passed, it only felt more and more awkward. You couldn't stand the silence for much longer, so you simply spoke again. "So... A-are you okay?"

He turned slowly to you, his expression still a little crestfallen. He tilted his head as he looked at you, and it took a few moments before it became clear that...

You have the following choices:

1. He couldn't understand a word you were saying.

*Noteb*
2. He could only speak a few words of English.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
