This choice: Tell the truth.(Now that you can Stride, what can go wrong?)  •  Go Back...
Chapter #34

Honesty is the best policy.

    by: Quagmire69 Author IconMail Icon
Aiden Darren: Okay...

I don't see a way around this other than telling the truth...

I'm a dweller!

Commander Erwin Smith & S.O.S: Dweller?

Hanji ZoΔ“: It's true!

Petra Rall: Sweetie, you're too big to be a dweller.

They're only a little over a decimeter tall.

Vice Captain Eld Gin: They also don't exist.

Gunther Schultz: They're just the stuff of fairytales...

AD: We absolutely exist!

Ouro Bazad: Oh yeah?!
Prove it.
Ow...

AD: Fine! I will!
>[You shrink down to a centimeter, then quickly climbed up Petra]
Captain Levi Ackerman: What the!?
Where'd the kid go?

AD: Up here!
πŸ§ŽπŸ»β€β™‚οΈβ€βž‘οΈ
πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸ¦°
PR: Are you...?

AD: On top of your head.
[To the others] This enough proof for you?

Men:(Dumbfounded)

HZ:😍 Eee!
You're so adorable!
[She pushes Levi aside]
Come to Mama Hanji!
[Once again, you were in her grasp, tightly pressed against her cheek]
AD: I'm not your child!
<[You grow back up, but due to a medical diagnosis(that will be revealed in due time), you appear as you did when you were 13, despite being 20, and 4' 8".

In addition, your once long blue tinted raven hair, sapphire blue eyes & your fair complexion, you now have dark brown hair, brown eyes, and complexion & features more like Hanji]

PR: No offense, but you look like you could be her child.

HZ:😍 Right!?

AD: Oh, this?

This is due to my Changeling trait.

ES: And what is that exactly?

AD: Well, Fablefolk, also known as Dwellers, are actually the descendants of many beings of fantasy, which almost all of them were, in fact, real.

The Changeling trait can occur when a dweller has fairy & human ancestry.

EG: So, you're somewhat human?

AD: Drops in the bucket.

HZ:😍 Fairies are real!?

AD:(Correcting) Were.

They were real.

GS: What happened to them?

AD: Humanity did.

Humankind sure doesn't take kindly to intelligent beings that aren't humans...

Hell, from what my dad said, you rarely tolerate other humans that look different from yourselves.

Anyways, how Changeling works is if I can get a genetic sample from an organism, I can replicate that organ on a cellular level.

Although, it's much easier to replicate a heterotrophs than autotrophs.

ES: Hanji, did you get any of that?

HZ: Mostly, yes...

In layman's terms, Aiden can look like anyone with the proper genetic sample.

GS: Is that why there's a Kid Hanji?

AD:(With Hanji's voice) Yes, that's why.

Scouts:😨
LA:😰
HZ:😍

AD:(You shake yourself, returning to your true appearance) It's involuntary, for the most part...

*Growl*

EG: Sounds like someone really is hungry...

ES: Let's get you something to eat.
...
[Dining Hall]

AD:πŸ˜‘...
Gruel?
Again?

ES: It's not gruel, it's porridge.

AD: Mr. Smith, this is gruel.

It was porridge 5 days ago when you didn't water the hell out of it.

Are you running low on cereal?

ES: Feeding a corp requires us to stretch our provisions.

AD: Even when you're protected by Wall Sina?

You & every man & woman put your lives on the razor edge of death, engaging Titans more than anyone should ever have to, and what do ya get for it?

Bland, boring & crap food!

My dad said there's a saying.
"An army matches on its stomach."

You might be the only thing between humanity & annihilation!

You deserve to eat like the dauntless soldiers you are!

OB: Yeah!

We sure as hell do!
[The Scouts seemed to vehemently agree]

AD: If today were your last day on this Earth, you deserve a meal fit for royalty, not a stomach full of bland gruel & stale bread!

Scouts:(Cheering)

ES: As much as I'd like that, we only get what we have.

AD: If that's the case, then I'll be hospitable & offer you my homestead provisions.

Follow me.
...
[You lead Erwin, Hanji & the SOS to a room filled with gravel]

OB:(Muffled) What're we doing here?
πŸ˜– AH!
AD: Oh yeah, you bit your tongue again...
βœ¨οΈπŸ’§βœ¨οΈ
✨️🫴🏻✨️
Hold this water in your mouth for a bit.
[Ouro slurps up the levitating orb of water, surprised at how pure & refreshing it is.

What he didn't know is you infused some restoration magic to it, allowing his tongue to heal almost instantly]
OB:*Gulp*
My tongue...

It's all better now.

How'd you do that?

AD: As Dwellers, we can heal virtually any condition or wound, in theory.

In practice, I alone wouldn't be powerful enough to heal mortal wounds.

Magic like that can take a toll on you quickly, even tapping into our own lifeforce, so Dwellers circumvent that by utilizing human blood.

ES:😰
LA:😰
SOS:😰😰😰😰

AD: It's not what you think.

Your blood is crammed full of mana, so much so that it could be used to create potions that restore us, especially after healing you.

HZ: Sounds like a symbiotic relationship.

AD: Exactly.

Now...
Onto business...

βœ¨οΈπŸ–πŸ»βœ¨οΈ
[With your hand raised, you restored the once pulverized pillars back to normal, revealing a pair of cellar doors]

EG: There's another basement here?

AD: Do you mean the dungeon with the cells?

This is different.

This basement runs underneath the entire castle.
...
[Basement]
[Your family basement was full of relics, artifacts, oddities, trinkets, treasures, books, scrolls, crates, barrels, lost technology & just a whole miscellaneous assortment of objects & materials]

HZ:🀩...
Is this Heaven?

AD: To you, this might as well be Heaven on Earth...

Actually, what we're looking for isn't here. It's deeper down.

LA: Deeper?
...
[You lead them to a manual service lift]

GS: We're riding that?

EG: Who's staying behind to operate it?

AD: No one has to.

I can remotely operate it with my telekinesis.

Scouts: Tele-what now?

That's just a fancy way of saying that I can move things with my mind via magic.

LA: How deep does this go?

AD: There's 9 subbasements. Why?

LA: I'll stay up here then.

AD:πŸ’Based on his background, it makes sense he's not too crazy about going deep underground if he can help it.
πŸ—£While you're up here, you might want to round up some extra hands.

ES: Good call.

PR: So, where to first?

AD: Let's see...
Sub 1 is residency,
Sub 2 is the main library,
Sub 3 is the main storeroom with the bulk of our stuff,
Sub 4...
Actually, Sub 4 is probably a mess...

Sub 5 is the greenhouse,
Sub 6 is the fruiting chamber,
Subs 7-9 are where we store our food.

Sub 7 is out dry storage.
Sub 8 is our cool storage,
And finally, Sub 9 is our cold storage.

Dry storage has most of our crops & grain.

Cool storage has foodstuff that needs to be colder than the outside,

Finally, the cold storage keeps things below freezing.

All we need is in Sub 6, 7 & 8.
...[From Sub 6, you grabbed enough pink oyster mushrooms for the Survey Corp, and from Sub 7, you got flour, baking soda, maple syrup & oranges.

Finally, from Sub 8, you grabbed potatoes, onions, bell peppers, milk, butter & buttermilk.

With the ingredients you wanted, you all returned to the basement, seeing Levi with a handful of other Scouts]

LA: Took you a while.

Scout 1: How long has this place been here?
Scout 2: How long has that food been there?
Scout 3: Who's the kid?

AD: All will be answered in good time...

Now, does anyone else in this castle have any experience cooking?

It'd take forever for me to cook it all alone.
...
[Dining Hall]
AD: Don't overmix that batter.
If it's a little lumpy, that's perfect.

Let those potatoes cool completely before you pan fry them, and sautΓ© the diced peppers & onions a bit before you add the potatoes.

Once the mushrooms are crispy, it's ready.

Those eggs look great!

S3: Seriously, who is this kid?

S2: No idea.

Scout 4: The kid sure seems to know about cooking.
...
AD: Let's eat!
[The Survey Corp was blown away with the tasty, hearty breakfast]

S1:πŸ˜™ I never had griddle cakes so big & fluffy...

ES:πŸ˜— These mushrooms taste like bacon...

Scout 5:😚 It's been forever since I had a nice runny egg...

HZ:😚 Mmm... These potatoes are crispy & delicious!

AD:πŸ˜™ Haven't had a nice breakfast like this in a while...

HZ:😊 Oops!
You got some syrup on your chin.
Let me get that for you.
[She takes a napkin, wets it with her saliva & wipes away the syrup streak from your face]
AD:😠 Hey!
I can wipe my own face, thank you very much!

HZ:πŸ€— I'm sorry, but you are just so adorable!
I can't help myself!

I just want to squeeze you & pinch your cheeks!

AD: If you hug me any tighter, your stink will rub off on me!
Scouts:😐...
HZ:😒 I...I don't stink...

Do I?

PR: No.
LA: Yes.

AD: If it makes you feel any better, you all stink!

Scouts:😠...

PR: Hey!

That's rude, you know.

AD: The truth can be harsh...

Out of all of you, Captain Levi smells the most bearable.

I don't know if that's because he cares about hygiene more than anyone else here or because his scarf is washed with lavender.

LA: How did you know...?
Wait, was that you?!
Is that why it always smells like lavender whenever we're posted here?

AD: Yes, and yes.

If it's okay with you all, I know of the perfect place to bathe if you're up for it.

ES: Well...

A bath would be nice...

Very well.
