Chapter #5

Two daughters.

    by: Unknown

The sun peaked through the windows, offering its brilliant light into the bedroom of the girls bedroom. The mirror of the vanity glared and reflected this blinding light, doing away with the darkness that drowned the teen girls room.

As if on cue, the girls alarm, from her iPhone went off, polluting the scenery with the non-discrete default ringtone for the alarm; Obnoxious was the only term that could’ve been used to describe the awful tune that blared from the phone.

“Ughhh…” The girl groaned, tossing and turning in her bed. She was awake, the alarm ensured this. She refused to get up, the bed felt so nice, warm... Yet, despite the tranquility she felt at this moment, the alarms noise pollution guaranteed her peace would be disturbed.

She opened her eyes, slowly, hesitantly. “Geez… Can’t I sleep in for once…?” She moaned.

After another 5 minutes of just laying, sprawled about her bed, she rose, stretched her legs, arms, everything in an attempt to wake up. She gave a soft yawn and placed her feet on the floor below, still half-asleep, and proceeded to the restroom.

Her name? April Wills, a 17 year old girl and high-school senior. She dragged herself to the restroom, still attempting to wake up. Upon arrival, she turned on the sink and splashed her face with the cold water that erupted.

“That’ll wake you up!” She exclaimed. The cold sensation caused her to stand up straight at 5’5.”

“Time to get ready…” She softly said, as not to wake up her younger sister, who was probably still out cold somewhere in the house. She wet her caramel colored hair and brushed it to its straight, full length at a few inches past the shoulders.

Upon finishing getting ready, she stepped out of the steam filled restroom, the moment the door opened, the steam from the shower fled the room like there was no tomorrow. And, there she stood, clad in her PJ’s, which consisted of a pair of women’s running shorts and a tee shirt donning her schools mascot and logo.

“Wonder where Dad is…” She sighed, proceeding to the kitchen of their one-story house When she entered the kitchen, there April beheld a note, on the table. She rolled her eyes, knowing what this was, just by the looks.

“Let’s see where he is now…” She sighed, in frustration. April began to read the note.

“Sorry about this, I had to go on another short business-type trip. You know the routine; There’s an envelope containing some money for food and whatever else you’ll need/want, and some emergency contacts. Again, I’m terribly sorry, I hate doing this to you girls so often. You two take care of each other and, I promise, we’ll spend some time with each other next weekend. I’ll be back tomorrow at midnight. Sorry, again. –Dad”

“He’s always doing this… I’ve already lost count of how many times he does this! Cat’s gonna be so disappointed…”

“Disappointed about what?” A young voice chimed in. April looked to the entrance of the kitchen and found her younger sister, Catherine Wills, 15 years, standing there a big smile on her face. She had always been the optimist type.

April simply held up the note; Cat knew what it meant.

“Again? He said this weekend would be different!” She pouted, plopping herself down on one of the kitchen chairs.

“I sometimes wish we had a different Dad! Someone who was actually here for us!” She continued to pout.

This statement pushed April’s buttons. “Now, don’t you say that! He tries, he tries and you know it!” April fumed, defending her father.

“Yeah, of course he tries! Look how often he actually talks to us, seems to care for us!” Cat sarcastically retorted.

April stood silent, she did have a point. He was hardly there, and, for one reason or another, he thought that money compensated for the lack of interaction. April walked over to the envelope of money and simply stared at it. She knew she had to change the subject, for Cat.

“Well, Dad or no Dad, we can still have fun!” April smiled, taking a seat next to her younger sister.

From there, April reached into the purse she carried with her always and pulled out a crystal-clear rock, stone type object. Cat looked to the rock, then to April and immediately smiled.

“You know me so well! I absolutely adore that thing! We’ve had so much fun with that!”

“Yeah, all this time, and, still, I have no idea how it grants wishes like that… It’s so… weird.” April added, referring to the several years the pair had possessed the stone. Since elementary school had the two sisters owned and used it, all under the nose of their father.

“Like, do you remember that one time you got a bad grade in that math class, so, I turned into a copy of Dad and posed as him for a parent-teacher conference! Being a guy was so weird!” April continued.

“Or, there was that one time that that popular girl you hate skipped class! Remember? Since she was absent, I became a clone of her, went to school that day and made her look like a total idiot!”

Cat smiled, nodded and chimed in, happily. “Yeah! Those times were great! Not that you needed to pose as her to make her look stupid; She could do that all by herself.”

April and Cat laughed and continued to reminisce about all the times they had with this magical, wish-granting stone of unknown origins.

This went on for another hour or so, all without pause. Finally, April came to a revelation, of sorts.

“Hey, Cat?” April asked her sister.

“Yeah?” Cat responded.

“All those times we were talking about with the stone, like, me turning into Dad, or into that girl you hate, or even when I became a clone of you and you became a clone of me so I could take a test you didn’t study for…”

“Oh! Thanks for that, by the way! Thanks to you, I got the highest grade in the class! I still owe you big-time for that!” Cat said.

April smiled a devious grin before continuing.

“I’m actually glad you said that you owe me big-time. Because, I think it’s time you’ve returned the favor. I’ve always used the stone for you, and, not once have you used it for me! And, since Dad’s not going to be here till tomorrow at midnight, I think now’s the best time.” April proceeded.

Cat’s smile and optimistic attitude slowly faded there.

“Alright, I guess I had this coming… So, what do you want me to do?” Cat sighed.

“I’m glad you asked…” April smiled.
