Claire could tell something was up as soon as she came to the kitchen for breakfast, dressed in the last pair of pajamas that she hadn't ripped yet. Usually, by the time she woke up, the table would be covered in a feast of every breakfast food imaginable. Today, all that was waiting for her was a modest breakfast - still huge by most people's standards, but hardly enough to satisfy Claire's expanded stomach.
"What's going on?" Claire asked her mom cautiously. Had her parents finally given up on fattening her?
Her mother, who was at the table, looked up from her coffee. "Hi honey! Your father and I agreed that it would be good for you to spend a day with your cousin, so we decided to give you a light breakfast to make the car ride easier."
"My cousin? You mean...Diane?" She hadn't seen her in ages, since long before the competition started. She frowned. "Isn't that against the rules?"
"Not technically, although typically the competitors don't see each other until the final weigh-in."
She was confused, but she knew not to question things too much. After all, she hadn't set foot outside since school ended; she'd take any opportunity to give her overweight belly a rest.
Still, her appetite wouldn't let her rest too long. She needed no encouragement to finish every morsel of food on the table, down to the last crumb. Soon she was sitting at an empty table, licking the last remnants of butter and maple syrup from her chubby fingers. Even though her stomach was still growling for more, she was happy to finish a meal without falling into a food coma. How long had it been since she'd been able to stand up from the table on her own? She wasn't sure.
She headed back to her room to finish getting ready, stopping in the bathroom to wash grease off her lips. Picking an outfit wasn't hard; after all, she only had a few more choices that still fit her. She'd have to ask her parents for new clothes. Again. Some of the outgrown outfits were only a few months old.
She changed into a pair of sweatpants that still fit, although they were snug. She couldn't help admiring the way they hugged her wider hips. At least the new weight isn't all bad, she thought to herself.
Just as she was finishing up her morning routine, she heard the doorbell ring. That must be them! She hurried downstairs to greet them...
