From a limited vantage point, you can see the jacket wearer is headed toward the table with all the food. If you hadn't eaten before coming to the prom, your miniaturized stomach might have been pleading with you by now. The maddening part of your position was that you couldn't see above the pocket you were in, to see the person's face, and you couldn't look much lower than the pocket except too far in front of them. Since you could just barely see the person's legs or it's easy to identify gender, but not much else. The jacket wearer is female, and she has just approached the table, along with a few fellow stragglers who haven't gone to dance yet. You sink back into the pocket, for fear that you might slip out as your carrier had to elbow through the snacking crowd.
As you reach the table, it becomes apparent that you may have a chance to escape the pocket, if you dared to part from your carrier. Again you frustrated desire to get a look around is denied by your current location in the pocket, so you're itching to get out as the jacket-wearing chick leans over to get some food. There were a couple of options for you. Take a risky dive from the pocket and hope to land in one of the ample bowls below, or take this pause in her walking to traverse the jacket for a safer spot to be kept. In this pocket you were in constant danger of slipping out, such as now, when you were holding onto the light jacket's inner lining to anchor yourself in against the tug of gravity. So it's either jump ship or just try to make some home improvements.
