I saw 'Mommy' looking through the shelves as I sat in the basket of the shopping cart. I was having fun being wheeled around. I must look ridiculous, an eighteen year old man in a dress sitting in a shopping cart in Walmart. But no one seemed to notice me at all.
I stared at the people around me, who didn't seem to be showing any interest in me.
"Hello," I said as we passed some woman in the aisle.
"Hello, sweetheart," she answered back.
Then to my Mommy the woman said, "Your little girl is very friendly.."
"Thank you," my Mommy said.
Then turning back to me, the woman said, "What's your name?"
"I'm Diane."
"That's a pretty name. How old are you honey?"
Before I could answer, I hear "Mommy," in a high pitched scream a few aisles over. Then I heard some crying. I was curious what was happening, but it really wasn't my concern. I'm just a little girl, nothing I could do about it. The screaming didn't last very long anyway.
------
The real Diane was at the service counter with a couple of women. She was still crying quietly with her thumb firmly planted in her mouth. The attendant saw her and the two women. She knew something was seriously wrong. Children lose their parents all the time and are brought to the counter for a store-wide announcement to be made. But this time it was different. From the attendant's point of view, Diane looked like a boy in his upper teens. It wasn't usual (she had never seen anything like this before) for a boy that old to be acting like a child. She assumed that Diane was special.
"Dean here, said he lost his Mommy. Can you make an broadcast so we can find her?" one of the women with Diane asked.
"Sure thing. What's your Mommy's name?"
-------
I heard the announcement, "Will Mrs. Audrey Jenkins please come to the customer service desk. We have your special package waiting for you?"
"My mother is here?" I thought. "What are the odds of that?"
About a minute later, I heard the announcement again.
"I'd better go to the customer service desk and see what is happening."
I try and get up, but it's awkward. I'm too big for the cart to begin with.
"Diane, please sit down," Mommy tells me.
"I want to get out."
"No honey, sit in there until we are done."
I try and get out of the cart, but I can't do it. Not without someone's help to steady the cart. If I try, the cart will flip over. Besides, 'Mommy' isn't helping me, she is actively preventing me from getting out.
Awe well. I've had my fun," I thought. "I should end this now by swapping back. But it won't work as I can't see the little girl to swap with. I didn't realize that I had to see my swap partner before making any swaps.
What happens next?
