Jake snuck into the kitchen while his mom and brothers relaxed on the couch with a movie. Mom had brought out a plate of baby carrots and celery but Jake had refused the snack.
"I'm not a rabbit, mom," he'd whined.
"Suit yourself," Mom had grinned. Wiggling her nose like a bunny, she crunched a bite of carrot and passed the plate to Corey.
Jake glanced over his shoulder to make sure the coast was clear. He could hear Henry laughing at the show in the other room. Crouching down, Jake opened the bottom cupboard near the stove. Reaching in a hand he pushed past a box of cereal and a package of noodles.
"Where are you?" he whispered. His fingers felt along the back off the cupboard until he felt the familiar package. He pulled out the bar of chocolate and grinned.
"I knew this stash would come in handy!" he chuckled. With another furtive glance toward the living room, he ripped the wrapper off the chocolate and took a bite.
The candy bar didn't last long. Jake tossed the wrapper in the garbage and wiped the chocolate off his lips. Thirsty, he grabbed a glass from the dishwasher and yanked the jug of milk from the fridge.
"Ug! This milk is heavy!" Jake grunted.
"Watcha doin'?" a voice at his elbow asked. Startled, Jake jerked and lost hold of the milk jug. The container hit the floor and the white liquid exploded across the linoleum.
Jake planted his hands on his hips and glared at Henry.
"Why'd you sneak up on me like that?!" Jake shouted. "You made me spill the milk!"
"Aw, I didn't mean to, Jake." Henry pouted.
"Yeah, well, now whose gonna clean up the mess? If mom sees this she's gonna be mad!" Jake complained.
Henry's eyes lit up. "I know! We'll let Boomer lick it up! He'll have it cleaned up real fast!"
