Kelly made it to the second floor, huffing and puffing. She started down the set of stairs to the first floor when she heard some voices on the stairs below. Oh boy, she thought, it’s the Evans’. They were a nice elderly couple that lived in the unit below her. They also liked to pry into her private life; asking her about her marriage plans and the like. Needless to say her current gravid condition would be a bit much to explain. She waddled heavily down to the end of the hall; hoping no one would step out of their units at this time of day. The Evans made it up to the hallway, Mrs. Evans chattering away about something to do with her sister. Kelly noticed they were carrying groceries; she started to move out of the corner toward the stairs when she heard Mrs. Evans
“Joe” she barked, “did you get everything out of the car?”
“Ahhh...yes I did” Mr. Evans replied meekly.
The Evans closed the door to their apartment. Kelly heaved a sigh a relief and slowly but deliberately moved her big bellied body to the stairs to the first floor. She began to work her way downstairs and made it to the first floor. Waddling to the front door she stepped out and looked around. No one in sight. She padded down the path to the parking area and was just about to go through the gate when she heard something that made her skin go cold.
“Kelly!!” called the voice, “Kelly!!”
It was her friend Cathy Bryant. Actually friend may not be the best description. Cathy and Kelly had worked together at an ad agency and Cathy had left to go work for someone else but had moved into the same apartment complex as Kelly. They occasionally socialized and helped each other on different projects. Kelly quickly stepped behind the gate to the parking area and closed it. The gate came up to her nose so if she stood close enough to it perhaps Cathy wouldn’t see Kelly’s rather difficult to explain condition.
“Hi, Kelly,” Cathy said, rather cheerily,” How are you?”
“I’m …fine” said Kelly, pushing her big bellied body as close as possible to the gate,” How’s things with you?”
“I’m good, Kelly” Cathy replied,” I’ve been really busy” Cathy tried peeking over the gate but couldn’t see anything. Looking a little puzzled as to why Kelly was standing so close to the gate she went on, “but I had a question for you about something I’m working on. You know that sketch I was doing for the agency that I showed you. Do you have a few minutes? I’d like to show it to you and see what you think.”
“Ahh, Cathy” began Kelly carefully, “but…I’m in a bit of rush. My sister and I want to go maternity clothes shopping this afternoon.”
“Both of you?” said Cathy, “but I thought she was the one having the….didn’t you say triplets?”
Kelly stopped. Somehow she had to get this under control. Again Cathy peered over the gate but couldn’t see Kelly’s big body. There was an awkward pause. Finally Kelly said, “Ah yeah, of course, she’s having the triplets” Feeling a little more confident, “You know what I mean….don’t you?”
Cathy hesitated, “Sure, I do. Will you call me later?”
“Yes, I will, Cathy. I’ll call you when OOOOHHHH…” Kelly stopped on a dime. One of the babies just gave her a kick that would shake a mountain. The kick tapped an emotional part of Kelly and tears began to flow.
“Kelly!!” said Cathy,” are you all right? Did something hurt you? Let me open the gate and help you”
“Cathy” said Kelly, wiping her eyes and regaining her composure,” I’m fine. It was just a kic…ah, gas pain. Look, I’d better go. I’ll call you later, OK?”
“All right” said Cathy,” Maybe I’ll come over”
“Yes, that would be…wait, I’ll see. Maybe we can do this by phone” replied Kelly quickly.
“All right,” now Cathy looked completely confused,” Take care and I’ll guess I’ll talk with you later.” Cathy started to walk away from the gate. A thought seemed to strike her and she turned around to see Kelly moving away from the gate. Cathy thought Kelly seemed to be moving strangely, like she was hurt or something. She started to walk toward the gate to get a closer look but her cell phone rang and stopped to answer it. Kelly turned to see Cathy standing fairly close to the gate so, as fast as she could move her hugely gravid body, she moved toward the other fence which shielded the cars. Peering over the fence she saw Cathy looking around after finishing her phone call Kelly padded to her car, as quickly as she could, opened the driver side door. She lowered herself into her seat and shifted the seat as far back as she could in order to accommodate her big bellied body. Kelly looked over her shoulder and saw Cathy coming through the gate. Kelly fumbled for her keys and started her car, pulled out of the space and took off for the driveway out of the complex. Kelly looked in her mirror and saw Cathy standing in the middle of parking lot looking a bit confused.
