"You're right," Rachel stated plain as day, staring into her coffee.
Taken aback at the bluntness, Ray stammered. "A-about what?"
"This was a stupid idea."
Pushing the table into Ray, Rachel stood up and made for the door.
"So what? That's it? Or are you going to call again in another six months? Ray pushed the table back into place but he didn't make a move to get up.
The flame that had been smoldering in Rachel's chest roared into life. She spun around and marched back towards Ray. She spoke in a low and seething whisper. "That's—You're mad at me? You're mad at me? You stole my life. Your bitch of a sister betrayed me. If she—I came here for closure. Yes, I missed having people in my life who cared about me, but that's not you, that's not—Kayla. I have no friends. I have no family. Thanks to you two I'm all by myself!"
"You chose to ditch us. That's on—"
"Are you fucking serious right now? You're transgender, I'm not! You didn't even give me a choice! You took all of my friends and family without asking! You put me in your—"
Rachel stopped as a crash of thunder sounded outside. Her eyes were red and tears were welling up inside them. Ray had the decency to look worried and maybe there was some shame mixed in. Since Rachel had been so busy avoiding and ignoring his old friends they never had a chance to learn how she was doing.
"I don't know. I don't know how to play the game women play. I don't know if I can put up with the men trying to have sex with me. I don't know anything anymore.
"Before this, six months ago, maybe—maybe you were right."
