It was on days like these that Dimitri felt very smug indeed. The black dragon twisted his thin, elegant body, the scythe on the tip of his tail flashing deadly in the midday sun, flying through the hoops and not missing a single one.
A wooden bullseye appeared suddenly, but he was ready, his maw open and blasting it to smithereens with his dark fire. Below he heard cheering from his classmates.
Dimitri grinned. There was nothing better than attention and praise to the black dragon. It was like music to his hears. It made him swell with pride, made him feel important, made him feel proud to be the son of two living legends.
Flying around the last bend, he gracefully touched down on the ground. He basked in their praise for a few moments. Most of the class were applauding, some shouting things like, "Wow, that was amazing!" and, "I wish I was as good a flier as you!"
A few dragonesses winked at him as he passed to receive his grade, which he returned with a charming smile, causing them to giggle.
"Well done, young dragon!" Terrador praised, his booming baritone voice sounding throughout the Flying Grounds.
Dimitri's smile grew even bigger. He was sure that he would bag at least 100 percent on this physical test.
"You managed to fly through every hoop, knock down every target, and did it in record time to boot," Terrador continued, "A- for your effort!"
Dimitri's smile dropped like a anchor. "But that was perfect, sir," he said, "Shouldn't I get full marks?"
"That was very good, Dimitri," the Earth Guardian said calmly, "but not perfect. You were a little slow on your turns."
How could that be possible? He was one of the best fliers in school, perhaps even in Avalar, or so he claimed to be. Dimitri wanted to argue more, but he decided against it.
Instead he hung his head in defeat and said, "Yes, Master Terrador."
As he left, the class applauded again, for Dimitri had received the highest mark so far, but this time he didn't feel and prideful. Instead, their praise now annoyed him and he only wanted to get away. Him, not getting full marks...
There were a series of raised cylindrical platforms on one side of the Flying Grounds, each varying in size, which acted as a strange sort of benches. It was where the students were to sit when their test was over.
Reclining on one of the platforms, Ash watched his grumpy friend approach with his bright blue eyes. The black dragon took a seat next to him, mopping in silence.
"Why the long face?" asked the maroon colored dragon with a smirk, "You did great."
"Great? Great!" exclaimed Dimitri, "I did every single thing right. I should get full marks!"
"Alright, Alright, don't get your horns in a twist," said Ash quickly, "In my opinion, I think you were just showing off."
The black dragon snorted. "You're just jealous that I got better marks than you," he retorted.
"Whatever," Ash said with a shrug.
Dimitri didn't say anything. He looked at his friend through the corner of his eye for a few moments. Ash was the son of an odd pair. His mother Ember, a pink dragoness that was a healer, and his father Flame, who was an enthusiastic collector of dangerous artifacts.
Ash had his mother's bright blue eyes, his father's golden crest, and the scale color that was a mix between red and pink, resulting in maroon.
Though, he shouldn't be one to talk. Dimitri was too a child from a strange pair as well. Despite being famous, the Legendary Purple Dragon and the former Terror of The Skies seemed to be an unlikely match.
Dimitri carried a lot of his mother's features, including her sharp blades, black and crimson coloring, and green eyes, but he had his father's handsome face and horns.
But he and Ash were best friends since they were hatchlings. They were growing up together and shared the popularity Dimitri had inherited from his parents and his ariel skills.
But despite their friendship, Dimitri couldn't help but notice over the past few years that Ash was a little unusual. He was, for some reason, very disinterested in females.
It was odd. He and Ash were 16 years old now, entering that uncomfortable phase that they were warned about for years at school when there hormones began to kick in.
Dimitri thought that he would be able to escape this awkward stage in puberty, but he received the full brunt of it. Every morning he woke up to a boner, and his thoughts drifted away to sex and females whenever he dared to daydream.
But Ash was different. For example, Dimitri pointed out the sex-appeal of a pretty, pearly white dragoness with feathery wings, who was currently doing the ariel test, but Ash only said in a bored tone, "Sure, she looks good, I guess."
But when a tall, well-endowed earth dragon named Titus stepped up to take his examination, Ash's interests sparked. Dimitri didn't want to sound paranoid, but he was beginning to think that his friend was...
The school bell suddenly rang, plucking Dimitri out of his thoughts. He was surprised how much time had gone by while he was thinking. Shaking his head, Dimitri followed the class out of the Flying Grounds, Ash at his side.
