Chapter #3

In the hall

    by: birdshoes Author IconMail Icon
You dry off and put on the nice pantsuit you had cleaned and pressed just for the conference. You're quite pleased to see that it still fits you perfectly and has a nice slimming effect on you. My workout and dieting regime has really paid off you think to yourself as you check yourself out in the bathroom mirror. Looking real good, Lizzie. The scent of mint clings to your skin and clothes, making you smell quite pleasant.

You finish up, doing your makeup and hair carefully. This conference is a big deal, and you'd like to make the right impression upon the right people. You need to look smart. Confident. Capable.

You glance at your phone. It's only 5:39 pm. The first night of the conference doesn't start until 7:30 pm. You've got time to sit for a few minutes,
and make sure your presentation is absolutely perfect. But... you haven't eaten since you were on the plane, and that was hardly a meal. You should probably eat something before the conference.

You sit down at the little hotel desk and open up your laptop. You scroll through your presentation quickly, skimming the charts and infographics you spent hours building. You smile to yourself. Why bother double checking? This presentation is perfect. You tab over to Google and search for local restaurants. You'd rather not eat cheap hotel food, so why not see what's around? You aren't super impressed with what you find, but there's a cute little French bistro within walking distance of the hotel. Looks great! you think. You hit "RESERVE TABLE" on Google, give the restaurant a little of your info, and grab a reservation for two.

You stand up and shut your laptop. You'll have to come back to your room before the conference to get it, of course, but you've got enough time to have dinner and a drink, get back, and arrive at the conference fashionably on-time. All you have to do now is find a dining companion - after all, only a loser would dine alone. Lucky for you, one of your "work friends" - a lower ranking subordinate of yours, Jessi Reedman - is almost certainly available. She's smart and hardworking, but she's a bit weak-willed and eager to please, so you're pretty confident you'll be able to get her to tag along. She's probably just sitting on her bed, waiting for time to pass so the conference to start. You smirk as you picture her sitting there, alone.

You grab your phone and purse as you head out the door, hearing it shut with a heavy thud behind you, and send of a message requesting Jessi's presence at Les Amis Bistro in fifteen minutes. You slip your phone into your purse and begin striding down the hallway to the elevator, when you realize you forgot something very, very important. Your wallet! You open up your purse and fumble around with your hand, trying to double and triple check that it's not there. But you quickly confirm you did in fact forget your wallet as you toss things around in your purse with your hand. It's noticeably lighter and emptier than usual, and your hand isn't greeted with the faux-alligator leather wallet that usually sits snugly in the middle of your purse.

You sigh. "I can't believe I forgot it..." you mutter under your breath. You're a bit of a perfectionist, so you hate it when you make dumb mistakes. No problem, I'll just grab my keycard...

You sift through your purse aggressively with your hand and furrow your brow. Your phone and charger are in there, your glasses case is in there, your first aid kit is in there... but you can't feel your keycard. Did you forget it in your room? You hope not. It would be easy to get a staff member to unlock your room, but it would be so embarrassing for any of your coworkers to see you've locked yourself out of your room. And while you certainly want to show up fashionably late to your little dinner date with Jessi, you'd much prefer to get there with enough time to eat. You don't want to wait around and get there too late. That would be rude.

Better make sure the card isn't buried under your belongings. You walk over to a little glass table with a lamp on it that's about waist-high and begin emptying the contents of your purse onto it. You grab your phone first and set it down right near the edge of the table, and then deposit your glasses case next to it.

Suddenly, you feel heavy and tired, like you just ran a marathon. Your limbs seem like they're made of lead, and time seems to slow down and dilate as you reach for your purse in slow motion. You hear each of your heart beats, which sound like drum beats. Your vision seems to go white. And then, after what seems like almost a minute, the feeling passes.

And, to your astonishment, you're no longer standing above a little waist-high table with a lamp on it. You're still standing right by this table. But, instead, it's towering above you. Your jaw drops as you take a step back and crane your neck up, staring up through the glass at your phone, which now seems like it's twenty or so feet out of reach. When the shock wears off, you futilely jump in your itty-bitty little heels (thank God your clothes shrunk with you!), hoping you might find some foothold you can grab and climb up to your phone with. But the table is just thin iron legs and a glass top - there's nothing for you to grab hold of. You consider trying to climb the cord running from the lamp to the power outlet, but you hesitate, afraid of bringing the huge, heavy lamp down on your fragile little head.

You breathe out heavily, feeling a worried frown creep across your pretty face. This isn't good! You've got places to be, and you can't be tiny! And besides, people aren't supposed to be tiny! You hope this is a dream, but you know it's not - so you've got to find a way back to normal size, fast!
