It was Penelope's birthday, but she wasn't in a very good mood, because her brother Brad had brought Betty with him to her party.
Her friends Megan and Sarah were sitting on the couch with her. Megan to her left and Sarah to her right.
"Stupid Betty! Ruining my party with her... stupidness!" she whined.
Soon it was time to open her presents.
Megan got her chocolate.
"Megan, can't you get your mind off food? I told you I'm on a diet!"
"I'm sorry... I forgot."
Sarah got her a pair of shoes.
"Oh, puh-lease! These went out of style 30 minutes ago! I hope you kept the receipt."
"Yeah, I did... I'll take them back tomorrow and buy something better."
After several more presents she finally came to Betty's.
"Probably a re-gift or something really cheap." she mumbled as she unwrapped it.
Her eyes widened when she saw her gift; a bracelet. Not just any bracelet, but a bracelet made from the shiniest and most valuable pearls in the galaxy.
Penelope had the urge to jump over to Betty and give her a big hug, but she kept her composure. She has a reputation to maintain.
"Uh... It's okay... I guess... Thank you, Betty." She almost kicked herself after letting that "Thank you" slip out.
Betty lowered her head, disappointed. She thought giving Penelope that fancy bracelet she made would be enough to make her like her. She spent all that time searching the mouths of space oysters for nothing.
When Penelope wasn't looking, Megan and Sarah quickly and quietly side-stepped over to Betty.
"I thought it was a great present, Betty." Megan whispered, not wanting Penelope to hear her complimenting Betty.
"Yeah, it's really pretty. How did you afford it?" Sarah quietly asked.
"Uh... I made them. With pearls I found on... trips."
"Could you make me one? Pleeease?" Megan quietly pleaded, joining her hands in a begging gesture.
"Me too. Me too. Pleeease?" Sarah joining Megan in begging.
"Uh, sure..." Betty said, wishing she kept her mouth shut. Now she'd have to go space pearl hunting again.
"Thanks." Megan and Sarah whispered together, sneaking off back to Penelope.
Penelope unwrapped the last present from her dad; an ancient medalion.
"Oooh! It's pretty! Thank you, Daddy! I'm going to my room to try it on."
Penelope ran upstairs and into her room. She sat in front of her mirror and placed the medalion around her neck.
