You sit down on the bleachers and begin to rub your sore knee. You'd usually want to play some basketball during gym, but you've been experiencing an odd pain in your knee lately, and while you're pretty sure it's not serious, you'd rather be safe than sorry. Everyone else seems to go about their business as usual, a few people running, a few playing basketball and a couple of girls playing basketball.
The volleyball girls draw your attention as it seems a few of the volleyball players are having a game, as well as some less athletic gals who are essentially serving as place holders. One among them is particularly unathletic, a hefty gal named Michelle with a large rear and a good deal of padding, that is, fat, everywhere else on her body. Overall, she must weigh somewhere around 250 pounds, a pear shaped 250 pounds at that. You smile inwardly, seeing no clear animosity between the thin girls and the fat girl, and thinking that surely but slowly a sense of acceptance has risen from the nothing between these females.
You are, however, wrong.
As Michelle dives for the ball, cutting ahead of Lindsey, a thin volleyball superstar, she trips and lets the ball hit the floor.
"Way to go, fatass!" says Lindsey with a laugh as Michelle hits the floor and jiggles, "What the hell did a cow like you think she was doing, playing sports? The cafeteria is that way!"
Michelle got to her feet with speed not becoming of a fat girl and left in a huff, spouting an insult back which was drowned by the laughter of other girls, though some of them seemed clearly uncomfortable.
That Lindsey, you thought, she needed to be taken down a notch. If only you could change her- make her more humble, make her see what life was like for Michelle, for bigger girls.
You shut your eyes and wished- indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
