This choice: Quality Control Specialist, pay is solid, job sounds easy • Go Back...Chapter #4Quality Control Specialist by: lifewin You fire off an email to the Quality Control Specialist posting, its vague but the money is too good for a starting role to pass up. Plus it mentions additional earning available for overtime work. Even just rough math, at $25 per hour you are making ~$52k per year, with some overtime you could easily be closer to $60k. You know people finishing college not making that much. You spend another minute or two scrolling your phone and figure you may as well head out for a run, get some exercise in. Surely any response won't come today.
You head downstairs, make yourself a quick smoothie (banana mango is always your favorite). Then with a shot of pre-workout you lace your shoes and takeover down the road. The summer air is cooling off already, it's not cold, but no more than 68 out. DING You phone chirps from your pocket, interrupting the tunes beating in your ear. You slow down and pull out your phone, an email has been received.
It's from the quality control firm, being so fast you assume it's a rejection. Likely they want some experience....
"Hello Daniel, Thank you for your application. We are quite interested in moving forward in a prompt manner, but we do not wish to waste either of our time. Please call the number below and state you are calling regarding the AVION MEDICAL quality control role.
(123)-XXX-XXXX"
You figure you should call the number immediately, typing it into your phone. It rings for a moment, "Hello?" a woman answers.
"Hello, I'm Daniel, calling about the Avion Medical quality control role... I... I was just emailed regarding it"
"Ah, yes, hello Daniel. I'm glad you called so quickly. If you are interested, I'll go over the rough terms of the role. If at the end you and I feel like you are a good fit, I'll give you the job. Does that sound good Daniel?"
"Yes it does," you quickly respond.
"Wonderful. The job of course is a quality control specialist, that you are likely wondering what that means? Our company does not produce medical products our selves, we are hired to test a certain type of products. I cannot release in advance what that type of product is before you start, we have serious confidentiality. But, the role is to test products by various methods and then we report the results. The role does not require any specialized knowledge and we do pay extra for overtime hours, which are frequently offered. All testing happens on site. Sometimes, for reasons which will become obvious if you accept, we ask that our testers remain on site overnight, paid overtime of course. If you accept, you will begin tomorrow with an introduction day, and we offer you $26 per hour and a $1,500 signing bonus earned upon completion of your first day. So Daniel, so we have a deal?"
It doesn't take you very long to consider, clearly its a great offer. Especially the signing bonus. It would allow you to start searching for an apartment fairly soon. "I accept".
"I'm glad to hear Daniel, please arrive tomorrow morning no later than 8am, since we have a long day. The address is 55 Arome Ave," she states and hangs up. You are over joined, a job already.
Better yet, a good one. Earphones back in, you continue you run, faster than you ever have before.
Once home, you inform your parents of the job. They are overjoyed, confused about the vagueness but they accept it.
The next morning you hop on the bus at 7:15am, arriving at the office address blue dress pants and a freshly ironed baby blue dress shirt tucked into your pants. You didn't know how to dress.
Looking at the building it's a sleek, reflective glass structure, two stories tall on a quiet street. Mostly industrial buildings on the road. A small sign outside states AVION MEDICAL SERVICES. Walking up to the door there is a bzzzz and it opens. Inside a small lobby, a plain light green room, a few simple chairs, and a women reception desk. Behind it is a woman, maybe 40 years of age. She is clearly fit, wearing a black office dress with a short white lab coat on top. Her blonde hair hangs just past her shoulders. She looks up at you and stands, "Hello, you must be Daniel. Don't look so surprised, you are our only new starting employee today. Employees use a separate entrance. I need you to sign your employment contract and a confidentiality agreement, stating you will not discuss our work here," you scribble your initials on a few spots she directs to. Only scanning the form to check the pay is listed there. She continues on, "wonderful, follow me and we can begin your introduction. Oh, and please leave your backpack and cell phone at the front desk. We cannot allow any photography inside". You leave them on the desk following her down the hall.
"Here at Avion we mainly focus on testing of medical items related to personal care items. Those being items that people must use in their daily lives, specifically incontinence products. We test the products to see how well they perform; do they hold as much liquid as they say. Do they stay on, are they comfortable. As well we test a few associate products that can be used in conjunction"
"How do we do that?" you ask.
"You will see in a moment. You can call me Sandra by the way," she says opening the door to a room off the hallway. Inside a doctors office with an exam table against the wall, appearing fairly normal. "Please take a seat on the exam table," she tells you and you get onto it. Next she... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
