This choice: Head to the back to change. • Go Back... Figuring it's better to not continue this conversation but to get on and make a few bucks on a quiet Sunday evening, you stride back down the costume aisle until you reach a door at the end - a door that you're sure wasn't there before. The wood it's made of is rough cut, and it's set into a simulated old stone wall. A sign on it is in that medieval script reading "Authorized Subjects Only."
"This guy really goes for the whole effect. you think. "But if being the right image is what it takes to make this kind of dough, then I'm all for it."
Entering through the door, you find a stone storeroom with flickering lanterns. To each side are similar doors one with the same old script that says "Change Yeeself Within." You roll your eyes and go through to a small chamber, again of stone, which has a large hand hewn chair with lacy cushions of a pink, yellow and red design and a full length mirror held in place by heavy iron brackets. There's also a small table that you set the smock and box on while sighing, wondering about how intense this fantasy is going to get.
When you move the box to pick up the smock a note falls off that you retrieve and read.
"A good apprentice becomes completely immersed into the world at hand."
signed "Because ..."
"Now that's just too freaking weird!"
Tossing it aside, you pick up the smock and see it is rather nondescript except for pink and yellow script letters stitched into the back: "K A M E." There's also a note attached that instructs you to remove outer garments before wearing. So you drop your jeans after removing your shoes and pull off the "T" then pull the smock over your head like a dress. There's a tingling as it slides over your body, but you figure it's just the coarse material it's made of. The thing fits oddly being loose at the top and bottom but cinched tight in the middle.
You shrug off the poor fit and open the box to see what appears to be a name tag, a very fancy one, that is partly under some material and only revealing the letters "Ell." Again, you wonder how this guy got your name on the tag and in the box, but you immediately look up and chuckle, "I know. Because ..."
Picking up the cloth wrapped item on top, you find a leather cord holding a small amulet with a crystal in the middle. It's more something that you think you'd see a girl wear but do remember pictures from your history book of men of this time often having similar jewelry. So you tie it round your neck. There's just enough cord so you don't choke yourself.
As you turn to reach back for the name tag, you become very dizzy and grab the arm of the chair to keep your balance while you close your eyes. There's no strength left in your legs, and your whole body starts to tingle again and get warm. Thinking you're going to faint, you turn yourself quickly so that you sit hard in the chair. Flashes of scenes and events like a rapid slide show or dream fly by too quick to focus on any one, but the theme seems to be medieval history and various items you saw in the store. You figure it was just something in that slice of pizza conjuring images in line with this whole bizarre situation.
In less than a minute, it fades as quick as it came. You take a deep breath and open your eyes to find a woman with long dark brown hair sitting in a chair staring back at you. She's wearing the same smock and has the same necklace but with a bright pink crystal. Closing your eyes again, hard, to rid your mind of this last remaining illusion, you blink a couple times towards the floor then look up only to see the woman partially obscured by something dangling in front of your eye. You reach up and pull aside some long hair as the woman in the mirror does the same.
"WHAT THE ..." you start to shout watching the woman move her lips in synch with you, but stop when the voice you hear is of a woman. Immediately you stare down at yourself to find the smock now filled out with a woman's chest. You slowly put your hands on them to be sure they're yours and discover - they are.
Instantly, a thought of terror shoots through your body, and you jump up and pull the bottom of the smock above your waist. You see nothing. Nothing! You slide one hand down and confirm by touch what your eyes behold. All your manhood has disappeared.
As you let the smock drop back, you think, "Maybe it's the amulet," and try to get the necklace off but can't undo the knot.
Frustrated by this, fear now sweeps through you, and you gaze into the eyes of your reflection while you step backwards just as she does as if either of you might escape or hide. On the second step, your leg collides with that table followed by the sound of something hitting the floor. A downward glance discovers the box with the name tag. Still mesmerized, you pick it up and glare at the full name now revealed. Not Elliot, but Elle.
Here you are, seemingly transformed into a girl by magic. The old guy said he was a wizard and that you had to be properly outfitted, but you don't know whether to just assume this is part of the job and put on the name tag or if something worse, an evil spell, has been cast upon you. A bit of anger now boils up in you.
That because-I'm-a-wizard has some real explaining to do!
indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
