"I gotta take a leak, mister. What'd you see out there?"
"There's somebody out there, it's no safe."
"My tush, there's somebody out there. We're in the middle of nowhere."
"It's no safe," Mario repeated.
Julie peered out through the windows, straining to see any signs of an external presence. "Did you see somebody? What'd you see?"
"They pop all our tires. Is something bad. I doan know what's happening, but is no good."
"Who popped all our tires?"
"Quien sabe."
"No tiene sentido, senor." Julie was becoming frustrated with this conversation, and had half a mind to go outside despite, perhaps even in spite of, Mario's vague warnings. Before she could act on this thought, Susana screamed from the back of the bus.
With a new spectacle to draw her attention, Julie looked back and her heart rate accelerated as she saw the horror dawning on the faces of her teammates. Screams and gasps went through bus, and Julie was one of the last passengers to see the source of all this commotion. Masked men with guns were running alongside the bus, and Julie watched as two of them met at the door and rushed on board.
Still standing in the aisle next to Mario, Julie met these two armed men at the head of the vehicle, and to her astonishment, they called her by name, "Are you Julie Huerta?"
