Due to Reed's less than business minded approach to inventing he tends to work on any kind of project that comes to mind and he finds interesting, even when he knows from the start that the results of those projects will never see the light of day from the start of the process.
Countless inventions that are either too costly or too dangerous for the common man are haphazardly scattered about the interior of his laboratory, any one of them could have grave results if it feel into the wrong hands. Or in a case like today's the wrong hands are not even necessary, simply falling out of his hands are all it takes.
During those few moments that Reed isn't working in his lab his wife Susan Richards also known as the Invisible Woman likes to take the time to clean it up as best she can to try and make the place look as presentable as possible should the need arise for anyone besides its owner to set foot in it.
As she was dusting of one of the counter tops, Susan's elbow accidentally brushed up against a small container filled with a clear liquid. The container fell to the floor and shattered, with the liquid inside promptly evaporating.
Feeling quite ashamed of herself for being so clumsy Susan wrapped up the pieces of glass in an invisible forcefield and dumped them in a nearby trash can. Then she turned around preparing to get back to work, when she felt a tingle run up her spine, and a strange sensation start to flow through her body.
