For several minutes, I sat at the edge of the bed, not knowing where I was or what was to become of me. I have to admit, I cried more than once. Finally, the door opened and Umbra returned with a woman in tow. I gasped, a flicker of hope in my eyes as I saw it was mom! Only I became concerned when I saw the scowl on her face and fury in her eye.
"Mom..." Worried, I began.
"In a moment, honey." Patiently, mom interrupted. "Right now, you need to understand your new reality."
With that, Umbra gave me a set of clothing before turning to mom. "I will give you two a few minutes to talk." Calmly, she said.
Mom nodded and waited for her to leave before turning to me. "What you have been told so far is entirely true." Serious, she explained. "You had fallen into an induction trap that was meant for another person, making you a vampire."
"How do you know about this?" Fearful, I demanded.
Mom shrugged before showing a set of her own fangs, causing me to shudder. Several emotions ran through my mind at once, terror and sadness among them. As if sensing my emotions, mom sighed before motioning to the clothing. Uncertain, I began to get dressed as she continued to talk to me.
"I am a psychic vampire." Serious, she said. "I feed upon the life energy of people rather than their blood. I have had so many last names that I had lost count but I was originally Elisabeta Tepes."
My eyes went wide. "Count Dr..."
Mom hushed me silent before smiling kindly. "Not his first wife but first daughter." Softly, she explained. "That makes you his granddaughter so you can imagine my annoyance when I learned you had been awakened before I was ready to allow it."
"Awakened..." Confused, I asked.
Mom nodded. "You see, psychic vampires are not physically undead; they are mentally undead and thus their bodies can give birth so long as they seduce a normal human. That child, you, was born normal. Only once drained, the vampire within you awakened and your new existence began."
"So... dad is normal?" Wincing, i asked. "How do we tell him I'm a..."
"One step at a time, Sarah." Firmly but kindly, mom interrupted. "There is a lot for you to take in and understand. Right now, you need to eat."
I was fully dressed at this point and feeling very hungry. Only I was taken aback when mom produced a small bag of what only could have been blood. She stabbed a metal straw through the bag and squirted a small amount of its contents into my mouth before I could react. To my surprise, almost horror, I found myself literally drooling for another taste. mom then handed me the bag and I greedily drank it empty.
I went through four such bags before I began to feel my energy returning. Mom watched on as if she were observing an infant taking in her first solid foods. "I'm feeling a little better now." Honestly, I said. "Though I feel as if I..."
"This was all freely donated." Calmly, mom said. "You will not be ready for your first hunt for quite some time."
I opened my mouth to speak but mom stopped me before moving on to explaining...
