You look up toward the fetid, grated ceiling into the darkness above and can just make out the silhouette of a slender humanoid, probably an elven female, judging by her size and shape.
"Hey!" You risk a whispered shout.
"Hey... are you okay?" The decidedly female elven voice replies.
"I'd be better if you could pull on that metal bar next to you that keeps my cage locked!"
The elf fumbles around and then finds the lever activated lock and pulls it upward, straining against the lack of leverage that the lever in the other passage would have provided. Finally, your door pops open.
"Yes!" you squeal a little too loudly. Then you bring it back down to a whisper. "Thank you!"
"Anytime!" The elf whispers. "I don't see a way through this grate, so I'm going to keep going. My name is Areal, by the way. Maybe will meet up later. If not, good luck."
"I'm Jade. I'll keep an eye out for you on my way out of this hell. Thanks again."
With that, the elf runs off across the metal grate overhead with much more stealth than her initial entrance.
Surprisingly, the entire exchange did not even cause a stir among the other survivors in the adjoining cells. Maybe they're unconscious or heavy sleepers, or maybe they have just accepted death like a free man would a bird in the air.
