True definition of a Warlock.

The second you wake up the next day, you feel as if you were about to jump completely out of your skin. You had so much energy it was as if someone had fed you a ton of pixie sticks. Also, every light, sound and smell seemed sharper to you than ever before.

"This is too weird!" you thought.

You immediately assumed it was Mel or Hayley playing a magical prank on you and decided to confront them in private. You opened your door to go find them but ripped the door knob off, without any effort. The sudden removal of the door knob nearly threw you off balance. Frustrated, you kicked the door and it flew off its hinges, slamming into the far wall of the hallway with a loud bang. Startled, you dropped the door knob then carefully stepped out into the hall, now frightened to touch anything. Then, you heard hurried footsteps coming up the stairs. It was Mel and Hayley. They looked at the door then to you in complete shock as you turned to them, angrily.

"What did you do to me!?!" you demanded.

Although you did not intend it, your voice boomed as if you were screaming at the top of your lungs. The echoes shook through the entire house. Both Mel and Hayley were forced to cringe from the noise.

"Not so loud!" scolded Hayley. "I didn't do ANYTHING to you! Neither did Mel!"

Mel shook her head, slightly frightened by your obvious anger, and new strength. "Uh, uh! I kept my promise!"

"Then what happened?" you asked, more calmly, your voice still sounding powerful.

"I have no idea." replied Hayley. "But I suggest we keep this quiet until we can figure out just what is going on."
she paused, frowning. "I'll consult the book. Maybe there is an answer in there."

"I'll check too." offered Mel. "Let's solve this mystery."

"Fine." replied Hayley. "I'll lend you a copy, just don't tell mom."

"I'm coming with you two." you said whispering.

You were surprised that your mere whisper came out as your normal voice. Mel and Hayley were surprised as well and you carefully followed them down the stairs to the living room where they began to search through the book. It was nearly an hour of searching before Mel spoke up.

"I think I found something." she said. "It's a chapter called, 'True definition of a....."

"Of a what?" asked Hayley.

Mel slid her book over to Hayley and she began to read the chapter, her eyes widening in complete disbelief. "They never covered THIS in my training." she whispered, shocked. "This is unreal!"

"What?" you asked, whispering.

Hayley turned to you with a large grin forming on her face. "John, you are a Warlock!"

You took a step back, which seemed to rattle the windows as if you had stomped. "Wait a minute!" you said, forgetting your new powerful voice.

"SHHH!" scolded Mel and Hayley.

"Sorry." you said, whispering again. "I thought boys could never work magic, only girls can."

"Only girls can become witches." confirmed Hayley. "Boys born into a witch family become warlocks!"

"But a warlock is a boy who can work magic, by definition." you protested.

"That's the definition given by the world at large." said the voice of your mother.

You, Mel, and Hayley all turned to find the grinning face of your mother. She had returned from shopping early and had overheard every word.

"The true definition of a warlock is a boy, born into a witch family who can resist magic but not use it." she said. "If you want to hear more, put your books away and come help me with the groceries."

You stood up to offer your help but your mother shook her head. "I'm sorry, John, but you are far too unstable at the moment, I will have to knock you out for a few hours. After that, we will explain everything to you at length."

You started to protest but your mother waved her hand and you collapsed. Your mother carried you back up to your bedroom, gently put you to bed, then repaired your door with her magic. Unknown to you, while you were asleep, your mother returned to the living room and asked Mel and Hayley to sit.

"The only reason I am not talking to John about this now is because, at this point, both his body and mind are very unstable. If I tell him now, he might get very upset and will not do any of us any good.."

"What's this about?" asked Hayley. "What's happening to John?"

Your mother sighed, patiently. "Boys born into a witch family can never work magic." said your mother. "However, everything has a balance. As a trade off for having no magic power, the boys are blessed with INSANE attributes and animal like senses. These boys are called warlocks, or demons of war."

Mel and Hayley exchanged startled looks then turned back to their mother in shock. "What!?!"

Your mother swallowed hard. "Warlocks had been used to fight the witch's wars against the powers of the undead such as vampires, zombies, and the such. They still are, when needed. Otherwise, they serve as protectors of the witch families because their physical power is easier to explain away and avoid suspicion."

"Just how strong will John get?" asked Mel.

Your mother smiled. "My mother told me that my brother, Jack, when he turned 13, could move from one side of this house to the other in the blink of an eye. That's what makes warlocks so powerful."

"That's fast!" whispered Hayley, impressed. then she thought of something. "Wait, if John is so powerful now, could he accidentally..."

Your mother laughed. "You have nothing to be afraid of." she said. "John has a good heart. Besides, his power is very similar to our own, only his 'magic' manifests itself physically rather than mentally." she paused. "Magic, weather it be mental or physical is not powerful enough to kill. John can beat the crap out of a person a hundred times but his 'magic' will not allow that person to die."

"So, John CAN fight back against magic." said Mel, looking disappointed.

"They can resist magic." corrected your mother. "Not fight it. Just as we witches are able to resist their physical powers. It is an even playing field."

"Why was I not told of this during my training." asked Hayley.

Your mother smiled. "Because I told them not to, I wanted you to discover this on your own." her smiled broadened. "All of you will be training with him, just take things too far. There are things about a warlock I have not yet told you about."

With that, she walked away, leaving both Hayley and Mel slightly shaken.
