Mel ran into the living room with an obvious look of concern on her face. "John!?!" she called. "What happened!?!"
She ran up to you and quickly examined the damage to your hand before she then noticed the magic book resting on the coffee table next to your book of chaotic science. She gasped out loud then turned to you, disappointed.
"Are you crazy!?!" she whispered. "What if Hayley or worse, mom came in and saw you with your chaotic science book!?! It would have been bad, worse, since you found one of their magic books!"
"What do you know about my book?" you asked, whispering also.
Mel poked your head with her finger. "Hello!?!" she said, sarcastically. "We're TWINS, remember? We're sensitive to the other's thoughts and emotions. I sensed a lot of fear out of you so I started following you around and saw you go through that secret door in the basement."
"Okay! Okay!" you whispered. "Keep your voice down!"
"Anyway, I went in one day you were not home and found out what you were up to." said Mel, more softly. "I have to admit, you are teaching yourself some VERY scary stuff. Almost as scary as..."
"As magic?" you asked.
Mel nodded. "Mom, Hayley, me and Hannah are all witches." she said. "Boys can not work magic. However, they can, apparently, work this chaotic science. Fortunately for you, it seems as if chaotic science can fight magic." she paused. "I discovered the family's secret about a year ago and I have been studying and practicing it in private in the attic ever since."
You shrugged. "Why?" you asked. "If all of you girls are witches..."
"A girl with magic powers below the age of thirteen is very rare, from what I read." replied Mel. "I think it has something to do with your talent in chaotic science."
You nodded. "That makes sense." you said. "We are, after all, connected."
"It gets worse." said Mel. "Apparently, twins born into the witching world are very powerful but our practices are at opposite poles. In other words...."
"It's going to be very hard for both of us to keep our secrets." you finished.
Mel again nodded. "Besides that, you have another problem." she placed a hand onto your shoulder. "I know about you temporarily rewiring your brain to be female to understand us better. I can only guess that part of it did not revert to male. Also, there is a risk of that rewiring effecting you physically."
"What makes you think that?" you asked.
"Do you have a better idea of how you were able to read a book that only girls can see and try your hand at magic only girls can do?" asked Mel, seriously. "Face it, bro, you have a gender war going on inside of you."
"I could rewire that part of my brain back to male." you suggested, feeling a bit panicked.
"That will take you... how long?" asked Mel.
You sighed in surrender. "Too long." you replied. you rubbed your hand though your hair to calm yourself. "How do you suggest we remedy our current situation?"
Inside the hall, watching and listening, Hayley wondered the same thing.
