The following week, Jack was walking past the main entrance of the school, where there was a large bullitin board that was hung from the wall near the main office of the school secretary. There was a big message posted on colored paper, stating that Coach Torres was looking for one or two more boys who wanted to play on the Boys Under 14 years old soccer team. Not a lot of boys wanted to play soccer, since it wasn't as popular in school as football or baseball, but practice was only held once a week and the matches were only held on saturday mornings, so for Jack it was very easy to participate.
Jack walked up to Coach Torres' office and asked him if he could play. The Coach told him that it was fine, and he handed the muscular student a sheet outlining the uniform colors and where he had to buy the shin guards and the cleats.
Jack went home and told his mom that he joined the soccer team. He told her that he needed to go to the sports store to buy a uniform so he could play. His mom noticed that Jack looked a little more muscular than before, but Jack just replied that he had been working out lately. Jack went out with his mom that afternoon and picked up his jersey, his shorts, his cleats and socks. When he showed up for practice that day, he made sure he was ready to show his stuff!
Right away, Jack showed superior footwork and ball control. When other players tried to take the ball away from him, Jack managed to kick the ball around them, and still maintain possession. He was also a dangerous attacker on the goal, for he knew how to charge the goal with great speed and how to attack with so much speed and at such an angle, that he could fool the goalie every time and kick the ball into the net with amazing accuracy!
During the game, Jack kicked three goals and he helped the team win their first victory! This made him an instant hero on the team, and Coach Torres was very happy that he accepted Jack on the team so easily! Jack had joined the team and he played for the team for the rest of the semester, and the kids quickly made him the best player in the group!
