Chapter #4

Karma and Luck

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
My name is Destiny Evangeline, Dez for short. I am an average teenage girl in every way imaginable with one exception... I have the most uncanny good luck. Through this alone, I have been branded a problem child by my teachers and some classmates. I am an A-plus student though I rarely study. My small circle of friends seem to excel as well, though they do study. I have been told that I am rather attractive with my fair skin, green eyes and red hair but I find myself to be very shy. The gossip group, or the popular crowd, as they call themselves see me as stuck up as I seem to get all the breaks. The leader of the group, Cassie Banks who was Caitlin Spencer's right hand woman made it no secret that she hated me. She made it clear she intended to find a way, somehow for me to fail at something. I say was as Caitlin had made a complete 180 in her behavior during summer vacation. She was actually kind to me the last time I saw her...

My adventure began just as school opened again. Cassie approached me with her new followers of gossip makers. "Ladies, this is Dis, I mean Destiny." Cracking a grin, Cassie said. "She's the girl who seems to make high school look so easy."

I sighed, rolling my eyes. "What do you want, Banks?" flatly, I said. "I need to get to homeroom before the bell."

"Punctuality is so important to you, isn't?" Still grinning, Cassie asked. She cackled the said, "Well, you are going to be late this time... In fact, I predict you will be heading to the nurse's office."

"Lame, Banks." Unimpressed, I said. "You are one incident away from expulsion."

With that, I moved to walk passed her but paused as I sensed trouble from above and, without thinking, I pushed Cassie out of the way just as a light fixture fell from the ceiling and broke free from its wiring! Sparks flew everywhere, charring the lockers they touched, setting off a fire in the hall! The fire alarm went off and the sprinklers went off as Cassie stared at me like a deer in the headlights.

"That- That could have killed me...!" Trembling, she gasped.

I sighed. "Lucky for you I was around." Muttering, I said.

Cassie nodded, though she still seemed as rattled as her few friends. I looked passed them and spotted a boy near my age I had never seen before. he frowned at me then walked away. I do not know why but I had a funny feeling he was behind the light fixture falling. The question that haunted me was why...
