The Resistance.

"How... How can mom do that?!" Stunned, I demanded. "Is she... an angel?!"

Dad chuckled before waving his hand over me. It somehow gave me an extra sense of calm and peace. "You are surprising calm and collective, considering what you had just witnessed." Bemused, dad said. "Your mother is not an angel but that was the name she had given herself while leading The Resistance."

"The who..." Confused, I asked.

"The Resistance, Ava." Calmly, mom said. She turned to me, her wings still out. "We are still in a battle against The Hard Line."

She approached, the storm slowly moving out of the area. "They call me Angel." Giggling, she added, "I think you can guess why..."

"I never heard of them." Worried, I replied.

Mom smiled. "Have you heard of The Problem Child Gang?" Softly, she asked.

I nodded. "They are my favorite super hero group in Teen Mysteries Magazine."

Mom nodded. "Well, not to spoil the story, but they went underground about twenty years ago after their final battle with The Agency." Calmly, she explained. "Someone had to pick up where they had left off."

"That and a new enemy had emerged, one wanting to isolate our fair city from the world so to have all its power for themselves." Serious, dad added. "The Hard Line."

Mom keeled down to look me in the eye. "We need you, Ava." Serious, she said. "You and Skye... your father and I are still in our prime but our group lacks members and we fear The Hard Line is about to make its big push."

"I- I don't know how to fight..." Nervous, I said. "That and I know Skye can't..."

"We found that Skye can see everything that happens in this city." To my shock, dad replied. "This was what was making her jumpy... she was seeing too much."

"Ava, we are not asking you to fight but to help us find those who will." Taking my hand, mom said. "If The Hard Line wins, none of us will be safe or free."

For a moment, I was silent. Was there actually a secret war waging in our fair city? It was a lot to take in. I turned to Skye who seemed calm but still shivering as if she too was struggling to make sense of it all. Finally, I replied, "I need to know what we are up against if i am going to be of any help."

Mom nodded, her wings vanishing as if they were never there. "Thank you, Ava." Softly, she said. "Happy Birthday, by the way."
