Ken sat in his room distracted by facebook when an old cross country picture of him and Tom came up -- they were Juniors in high school, about a month after they first met. The boys looked like brothers. Only an inch difference in height, skinny as bones from the running and smiling the same grin. Ken guessed they were about 5'8" at the time, and about 145 though he hadn't weighed himself back then. Since then, the boys had changed.
Cross-country was the beginning of Ken's athletic career and the end of Tom's. Junior year had been the last year he ran. Tom's journey from 150 to 225 lbs took the 6 years Ken has known him. The weight's been slow to develop -- until now. Over 5 and a half years, he put on 60 lbs. Ken only noticed the difference from old pictures. But three months ago, something changed. In just three months, Tom has put on 15 lbs.
Ken noticed. 60 lbs in 5 years was hard to notice, but when Tom came out of the shower the day before he had angry red stretch marks on his back. Ken noticed it with concern. His roommate Shayne seemed to notice it with something else.
