Jonathan Sr. was reluctant, but it was Johnny's choice. It's just that he almost didn't feel like his son.
The whole family was insecure about their weights around Johnny.
"Where are you going?" Mary asked Johnny. "I'm going on a date with Kyle today."
"Oh, alright then. Have fun!"
Mary was more positive than the rest of Johnny's family about Johnny's weight. If Patrick was like Jonathan Sr., Johnny was like Mary- both in looks and in attitude. He even had a hint of her pear shape about him, though it was hard to notice because he was thin and wore loose clothes.

"Seriously? That's awesome!"
Kyle was a very easy going guy. A lot less emotional than Johnny, but pretty happy.
"Yeah, it was pretty good."
"So how's the family?"
"Well...they want me to put on weight."
"Get out! Really?"
"I know!"
"Well you are a bit skinny, you know. But seriously, you have an unusual family.
"Pot calling the kettle black much? Your dad is like 34, your mom's 38, your sister cross-dresses, and your little brother wants to be a mathematician when he grows up!"
"Well they're odd too, I guess. Mind you, your mother has the perk of being a bitchin' cook!"
Johnny had to agree. He and Kyle both loved her cooking above all other food.
"Yeah, the food is really good. But I still think serious weight gain is asking too much of me."
"Hm. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Oh, it's getting late. You sleeping over or what?
