He was surprised as she laid a hand on his arm and guided him swiftly towards a side-room. He almost expected Debbie to say something as they passed her, but her attention was focused on the little capuchin crouched on her shoulder.
The neuralizer room stood in stark contrast to the animal sanctuary. Where the sanctuary had been light and airy, in here there were no windows. A single bulb illuminated the grey walls. Against the back of the small room sat something that resembled a CAT scanner.
"Would you like a demonstration?" she asked. Her hand was suddenly on his chest, pushing him gently back onto the plastic bed. Even married twenty years, he was suprised at how much control her soft touch had over him. "Don't worry, it's perfectly safe," she said sweetly, typing into an adjacent computer.
The bed on which he lay fed into the machine, until his head was entirely enveloped by it. "With this, we can program anything we want into our animals. Feeding habits. Breeding habits. Obedience."
The machine flashed once. The bed was fed out and Mike sat up, blinking back the stars filling his vision and the burning sensation inside his skull.
"See. Painless," she said. "Lick my shoes clean."
Mike looked shocked for a moment but, as the burning sensation in his skull increased, he found himself on all fours, tracing the contours of her boots with his tongue. He could taste sawdust and animal manure in his mouth as he licked them clean, but his body stopped him from retching or from pulling his mouth back.
She smiled down at him. "Powerful, isn't it? If I wanted to, I could make you throw yourself into traffic. Now..."
