You are Robbie, the 15-year-old son of the famous inventor, Doctor Michael Anderson. Doctor Anderson is at the forefront of technology, producing remarkable gadgets from his humble lab located in the basement. He's become rather rich off it, though he's so absent-minded its debateable if hes even noticed.
Aside from your semi-celebrity father, you're a fairly typical high school kid. You have a 17-year-old sister and arch-nemesis, Tessa; an older brother, Donnie; two boisterous younger twin siblings; and a loving mother, Mrs Debbie Anderson.
You have a best friend, Nathan Huggins (junior), and even you have to agree he's a bad influence at times. One of the rumours currently going around school is that Nathan's dad has been in prison twice for dealing in stolen (or contraband, depending on who is telling the rumour) goods, and can get anything for anyone. A rumour Nathan does nothing to discourage.
It is a rainy, dreary morning when you descend the stairs and find your mother tapping on the door to the basement. She holds a tray to her side with her other arm, on which sits a bowl of cornflakes, a glass of orange juice, and a folded bit of card on which is written, in rather angry handwriting,
Happy Anniversary
Love you always

- your wife (remember her?)
"Honey? Darling?" she calls quietly through the door.
"Is dad working on his inventions?"
She looks at you and sighs despairingly. "I don't know, dear. I haven't heard a peep from him in two weeks." She glances at her watch and pushes the tray of food into your arms. "I have to go. Take this down to him. And make sure he eats some of it this time." With that, she hurries out of the house.
You shoulder open the door marked with the signs 'KEEP OUT', 'SCIENTIST AT WORK', and 'SERIOUSLY BILLY KEEP OUT' and descend the basement stairs. A single, dim lightbulb illuminates the moist, algae-green stone walls. It looks like a real mad scientist's laboratory. You reach the bottom of the stairs and place the tray on one of the workbenches.
