Jen went back out into the waiting room and told Tonya she was going to stick around for a while longer while the tests on her blood were done. Her older sister groaned at this and said, "If I knew this was gonna take awhile, I would have brought my iPod..."
Jen knew the little teal rectangular device of which Tonya spoke of. She could almost envision it in her own pocket right now... Not that the sisters shared the same tastes in music, of course. Jen reached down to her shorts pocket and was surprised when she found a familiar rectangular bulge there. "You mean this thing?" she asked and pulled the iPod out.
Tonya's eyes went wide as she said, "My iPod! But what the hell are you doing with it, twerp?" instinctively insulting Jen despite the considerable size difference against her favor, with her sister bearing a body that quite possibly could grind Tonya's bones to make bread. Or at least snap her femurs like they were twigs.
"Don't call me a twerp!" Jen snapped back and then added, "Besides, I don't know why I have your stupid iPod in the first place. I imagined having it to give to you to shut you up, and suddenly I find it in my brand new pocket! I haven't even had time to rummage through your room, and it's not like I'd go unnoticed by you given how freaking huge I am!"
Jen handed the device over and left the waiting room to grab something out of the vending machine. As she did, she started cooling off and also started to wonder. Just how did she manage to produce that from her pocket? She knew she didn't have it when they left, and she had only thought about having it so she could keep Tonya happy so she wouldn't end up walking home.
Her thoughts ended when she got to the machine and realized she hadn't any money with her: she had left her wallet in her room at home. She imagined having the pink object in her pocket so she could buy something...and then felt an odd weight in the pocket on the side she usually kept her wallet in when she went out. She reached in and pulled out...her wallet!
"But I left this at home! How the heck did I do that?" Jen exclaimed, albeit delighted that she could afford her Aero bar and bottle of Coke. She put in the money...only for the machine to spit it back out into the coin return. She glared at the machine and tried again, saying, "Accept it, damn it!"
And to her surprise, the machine happily accepted her change. Now Jen was getting suspicious that she was somehow able to influence reality or something. But for now, she was just happy to have her snack and headed back into the waiting room, sitting back down beside Tonya. While she wasn't exactly hungry, Jen still found comfort in devouring the Aero bar like had never seen a chocolate bar before and drinking her bottle of Coke.
About an hour later, Jen was getting worried that the tests were going to take longer than Dr. Fairweathers had predicted, and that they were wasting their time. She imagined the 6 foot tall woman that was her family doctor coming to inform her of the test results. And not a minute after, she could hear the familiar clack of Dr. Fairweathers' high heel shoes against the tiled floor outside the carpeted waiting room approaching.
The doctor came in holding a few sheets of paper and said, "Jen? I have the results. Would you care to join me so we can discuss them?"
Jen nodded as she finished off her Coke and got up. She threw out the now empty bottle in the trash and then followed Dr. Fairweathers into the examination room. Once the doctor closed the door behind her, Jen asked, "So? What's the results? Is there something I should worry about, or does it say nothing we don't already know?"
Dr. Fairweathers shook her head and replied, "On the contrary, the results prove to be very interesting. Normally, the human body can't withstand such a massive growth spurt all at once. Some of the tallest people in the world to have ever lived have died fairly young due to complications tying into their size. You, however, are different. Your DNA seems to be specially coded to actually become stronger the larger you become. Normally this piece of genetic code would be dormant, as going back to your previous blood tests I've discovered this gene present in them as well, but now it's become active. It also appears to be dedicated to making your body grow, and some other things that we haven't discovered yet.
"However, I have no idea why it's become active. Perhaps you've triggered it through your sheer desire to have that growth spurt you were waiting for?" Dr. Fairweathers suggested, and then said, "Other than that, I'm afraid that's all I can tell you...unless there's something else you'd like to tell me?"
Jen nodded and replied, "Yeah. That stupid vending machine refused my quarters when I tried putting them in the first time. I told it to accept them and it did."
Tia wrote down what she was told and said, "Well the rejecting part isn't uncommon. It does tend to be picky with what coins are inserted. Why, just before I came to deliver this, it wouldn't take the last quarter needed to buy a bag of M&M's!"
Jen thought this was a good time to show her doctor what she meant. She said, "Just the regular kind? I think I can save you the trouble..." she focused her imagination on having a bag of M&M's from the vending machine, and the required change in the machine so she wouldn't feel like stealing. Less than a minute after, she pulled out a bag of M&M's from her pocket and handed it over to the now wide-eyed doctor. "I don't know how I can do that, I just can. I don't think I can make myself smaller though. Thanks for the information, doctor." Jen said and then headed out.
