She helps out by showing off to the recruits. (This little lady can wipe the floor with even the strongest of civilian giants, and lay them out flat, or dead even.)
*Note* She is the woman who brings in the baby in the first chapter of the magic users section. If you use her, give her the option of either being a new stepmother, or if it was just a demonstration of what the medics could learn, using the baby of another soldier.
Or, if you don't want her, make another new female human soldier. Just leave options for others.
