Sabrina set down her controller and hoisted herself to her feet, tugging at her pants again as they dug into her waist. She plodded towards her door, opening it up to reveal the upstairs hallway extending in both directions. The hallway was dark, mostly dark, with the only light coming from downstairs. She could hear something playing on the television in the living room at the bottom of the stairs and slowly crept in that direction.
She peeked down the stairs, spotting her mother sitting on the couch facing the TV with a smile on her face as light from the screen cast shapes and shadows around the wall behind her. Usually, Sabrina would be getting ready for bed about this time, but there was no way she'd be able to sleep with how hungry she was.
The stairs creaked as she began descending to the living room, and her mother glanced over at her, "Sabrina? What are you doing up?"
"I forgot to have dinner," Sabrina said, moving to sit on the couch beside her mother.
"Oh, that's right. I completely lost track of time and forgot to remind you to eat something," her mother said, wrapping her arm around Sabrina and pulling her close to her, "What did you want?"
"Actually, I was wondering if we could get McDonald's for dinner."
"Alright. I don't really feel like cooking something this late anyway," her mother said, kissing her on the forehead before standing up and walking over to grab her purse with Sabrina following close behind.
Sabrina shivered as they stepped out into the garage and out of the warmth of their house. Her arm broke out in goosebumps, and she wrapped them around herself, trying to conserve her warmth as she hopped into the passenger seat as her mother started the car and pulled out of the garage.
The world was dark around them as they drove down quiet streets towards McDonald's, though Sabrina didn't need the light to know that the trees around them were covered in vibrant orange and red leaves. Most of the houses were dark, though occasionally they would pass a car or the flashing red and blue lights of a police cruiser. Her stomach growled again as she looked down at her belly, eager for something to eat besides the chips and cookies she'd been snacking on for the last few hours.
It didn't take them long before they were pulling into the parking lot of a McDonald's. The building was a small brick building that made Sabrina think of the older movies her parents loved to watch when she was up in her room gaming, though it was far busier than most of the restaurants in those movies. Several cars lined up in the drive-through, and several people were walking in and out of the glass door. Sabrina's gut grumbled loud enough for her mother to hear, and she giggled, "Well, sounds like someone is hungry."
"Yeah," Sabrina agreed as her mother parked the car.
Sabrina hopped out of the car, shivering again as the cool autumn air seemed to envelop her in its coldness, and she brushed her dark-brown hair back over her shoulders as she followed her mother towards the entrance to the restaurant.
"Come on," she told her mother, rushing ahead of her in excitement, and she could hear her mother chuckle behind her.
As they entered the restaurant, Sabrina glanced around, spotting a few people sitting at some of the tables and another standing at the counter as they ordered their food. Her stomach let out another loud growl as the smell of burgers and fries that filled the air hit her nose. She rushed over to stand behind the person ordering their food, glancing back at her mother and gesturing for her to join her in line. Sabrina was practically dancing in excitement at the thought of finally getting some food as she waited for the person to finish placing their order.
Finally, it was their turn to order, and the two of them stepped up to the counter. There was a tall boy, maybe 18 or 19, standing behind the counter with a bored look on his face, "Welcome to McDonald's. What can I get started for you today?"
"Hmm, I think I'll get a McDouble. What did you want, Sabrina?"
