"So we ARE heading to the crash, huh? Think we'll see any bodies?" Spider called disinterestedly as he lagged behind his two companions. Eric's temper once again began to rise at the complete lack of sympathy in Spider's voice. "Just shut up unless you see anything move." Eric called back as he brushed aside a large tree branch. "And be sure not to take your eyes off of the ground, they could be hiding in these weeds and the last thing we need now is someone getting hurt." The trio seemed to be having a run of good luck as they walked as quietly as the could manage in the dense forest. Only weak Beast's appeared before them and they were able to avoid the attention of a zombie buck that was making its way through the trees aimlessly. It wasn't long before they came to a small stream that looked to only be one or two feet deep. "Spider, fill up our jug of water the rest of the way while I have a quick look around." Eric said as he walked over to a small tree and began climbing.
The view from only ten feet above the ground wasn't great, but Eric was able to see the faint trail of smoke still rising from the downed plane. They were close now, all they had to do was get over the nearby hill and they'd be there. Eric was about to climb back down when he noticed something moving down the hill at an alarming rate. "Hey Richie, Spider, look out!" He called as he began moving down towards the bottom of the tree. He looked up as he stumbled onto a weakened branch that creaked as he continued making his way lower, trying desperately to locate the foe he had seen just seconds ago. "Shit, where is it? Shit, shit, SHIT!" He cursed as Spider and Richie prepared for an attack that could come at any second. Finally, the Beast showed itself just as Eric hopped to the ground. It was a massive black bear with a huge chunk missing from its side. A few of its ribs and inner organs were even visible in the pale morning sunlight that shone through the trees.
Spider was caught completely off guard and was knocked away with a massive paw that sent him flying into the stream as the contents of his torn backpack spilled out into the water. Richie fired his only two shots into its head as it turned around and growled. Blood ran down its face like angry red tears as it charged, apparently mostly unharmed. Richie screamed as its paw began to come down, only to be stopped before it could reach him. Eric had picked up a large tree branch and managed to stop the bear before its attack could connect. "Big bitch, ain't ya?" Eric sneered mockingly as the branch began to snap and break under the enormous pressure of the monsters arm. Eric flinched slightly as half of his weapon broke off and sent splinters flying. The bear growled again and Eric swung the the branch with all his might. The force of the blow he dealt cracked the rotting bear's skull and snapped its head back at an unnatural angle. The bear shuttered... and regained its balance just as Eric delivered a punch to its exposed ribs. A soft crack was heard, but nothing else. Eric was at the beast's mercy.
Its paw began rising in the air, ready to strike the final blow on its helpless prey...
A gunshot echoed through the trees and a fresh trail of blood ran down the bears face. It turned around just in time to be caught twice between the eyes by Spider, who was now sitting up in the stream. The cold water washed over him as he glared at the bear with a small bit of blood running down his own head. He fired one final shot and the bear collapsed onto the ground. Eric walked over to it as Richie went to check on Spider. To Eric's immense surprise, the bear still wasn't dead! It didn't breathe and there was no heartbeat, but the otherworldly red light refused to leave its eyes. It let out a soft growl as Eric brought his improvised club down on its head. Richie pulled Spider to his feet and kept a steady hold on him as he got back on his feet. "That fucker really did a number on me. Sorry... about the backpack." He groaned weakly as a pack of cigarettes brushed past his leg. Richie helped him over to the shade of a large tree to tend to his wounds while Eric continued to pound the life out of the bear as it groaned.
