An unexpected disaster

It was now 6:56 a.m. The forest slept quietly and the sun began rising in the east, over the ruined city of Bitterwood. Eric was the first of the trio to wake up. He got out of his sleeping bag and walked over to the balcony. The fresh light illuminated the forest eerily as it spread slowly over the trees. Eric wasn't normally the type of man who'd enjoy a sunrise on a cool September morning, but was glad to actually have some peace and quiet for a change. That peace would be short-lived, however, as he noticed something on the horizon. It was a large 747 airplane with a huge chunk missing from its side. It bellowed a stream of smoke from its insides as it slowly descended towards the forest below. "HOLY SHIT!" Eric yelled as it passed by overhead, its engines thundering so loud Eric didn't even hear the words coming from his own mouth. For a split second it disappeared behind some trees a little over a mile away and a crash that was intense enough to shake the ground was heard. Eric stood in stunned silence as he watched the cloud of smoke rise slowly into the air. Finally, after a fews minutes, a final noise erupted from the downed plane. Its fuel tank had caught fire and exploded.

Soon the the other two prisoners joined Eric by his side wondering what the hell had just happened. Eric didn't say anything at first and merely looked on towards the scene of the crash as the smoke climbed higher. At last he choked out: "That plane... I saw that plane crash..." Spider and Richie exchanged confused looks and stared at the spot Eric was pointing at. "What should we do then...?" Asked Spider as he shrugged his shoulders. "Go and check it out...?" Eric turned around and walked passed both the men and sat down in his seat inside. "I just watched an entire plane go down right before my eyes..." He said quietly. "And you think we should go check it out?" His words were calm, but Richie could detect fury in his voice as they came out. He knew it wasn't a good idea to get Eric mad and quickly tried to diffuse the situation. "Eric, are you sure a plane crashed out there? Did... did you see it with your own eyes?" Eric rubbed his head and looked up at his friend. "I did. I think... I think there were survivors on that plane. The damn zombies must have gotten on board with them."

His temper seemed to be returning to normal as he slowly began to grasp the situation. Richie felt a wave of relief as Eric got back up without breaking anything like he normally did when he was upset. "Alright." He said as he put on his backpack. "Lets head out, if we wait too long the noise from that crash will attract zombies." Spider and Richie quickly put on their own backpacks and waited for further instructions. "We going to have to get down by climbing on one of the nearby trees. Don't fall, cause I'm not gonna carry anyone with a broken leg." The two men nodded and watched as Eric carefully made his way onto a thick branch and began moving down. "Hurry up." He called as he slid down to a lower branch. There were a few close calls, but in a few minutes all three of them were back on solid ground. Eric began walking off as soon as both of his allies were safely down from the tree. "Um, Eric?" Richie called ahead to his leader. "Yeah?" Came the reply. "Just where are we headed?" Eric took a moment to answer, but finally said...
