The moon was high above the Jehanna Desert late one night as a mercenary sat on look out duty for his mercenary camp. This was considered odd for a mercenary leader, taking a late night shift to watch over his group. There was something about the late night that he didn't mind, so this job wasn't so bad for him as it would be for others in his group.
"Hi Gerik!" A young voice chimed behind him. Gerik turned his head to find the youngest member of the group, Ewan, strolling towards him with a smile on his face as usual. "You took the late night shift again?"
"Yeah..." Gerik answered, slightly confused as to why someone his age was up this late at night. "What's got you up so late?"
"I couldn't sleep..." He responded sitting himself down right next to Gerik. "I'm too excited to figure out what this tome is." He held out a black tome towards Gerik. "One of the mages at the campsite we visited gave it to me, as a thanks." Gerik gave it a curious glance.
"And he didn't tell you what tome it was?" He asked taking a hold of the tome in his right hand. "I'm not so sure you should use it. At least get it checked out by your teacher."
"But the mage said it grants a certain strength." Ewan piped up, "It can't be bad if it grants strength." Ewan was just young enough that he didn't quite get the darker nature of the world. If someone said something, it must have been true.
"Anyone can tell you anything." Gerik told him, figuring he was old enough to know. "Your enemies can play tricks on you." He put simply shaking the tome as he spoke. Ewan looked a little bit disappointed.
"So I can't use it until I see Saleh again?" He moaned, slightly dropping his shoulders in shame. "That's a bummer." Gerik realized despite the fact that Ewan played pranks on him, Tethys had taught him to listen quite well. "Well, I'm going to try and head off to sleep again." Ewan stood up and spun around real fast. "Good night!" Gerik waved his hand and turned to find himself still holding the tome.
"Ewan, wait!" He cried holding it up. The young pupil didn't notice and disappeared into his tent. 'I suppose I should just keep it with me until tomorrow.' He set it down beside him and began looking back up at the stars. Not too much later another mercenary came out from his tent ready to take over the shift giving Gerik the chance to sleep. He took Ewan's tome into his tent with him and fell asleep moments later. Just after he feel asleep Ewan reemerged from his tent.
"Dang, he must have been replaced." Ewan sighed seeing the new guy on shift. "He must have taken it into his tent." Ewan darted through the sand into Gerik's tent and found him passed out on a sheet. Just to the right of him was the tome Ewan was looking for. "He never said I couldn't keep it with me..." He spoke to himself as if he was trying to convince himself he was getting around some sort of rule. He reached over and grabbed it, opening it up on his way out. He stopped and stared at the text in wonder as it began to glow a dark purplish color. An aura of the same color illuminated around Gerik, slightly scaring him hoping nothing too drastic would happen. He scurried out of the tent and back to his. Meanwhile...
