Chapter #5

A Particular Heirloom

    by: Bound77 Author IconMail Icon
The blue headed thief found himself prowling around the hallways of Grado Castle in anticipation of finding an enemy soldier nearby. Sure, Ephraim had taken out Emperor Vigarde but the rest of the troops had been ordered to search the castle for any stragglers who may be lurking. While Colm was somewhat doing this, his attention was mainly on the hope of discovering some secret treasure hidden in the castle; after all, his job as a thief was to scavenge anything he may be able to find on the battlefield. However, most of the rooms seemed to be cleared and emptied, much to his disappointment.

"It's no fun being a thief when everyone else pillages the castle before I get the chance to..." He murmured to himself, reaching for a nearby latch on a door. Much to his surprise, the latch wouldn't move. Needless to say, his curiosity was piqued. He quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out the handy lock-pick and put it to use. It only took a minute or two before the lock on the door was busted and it swung wide open.

Colm entered carefully, making sure that there were no soldiers waiting to ambush him in here but he was relieved to discover that the room was completely empty. To make things better, various treasures were lined against the walls; each a different size and metal.

"Jackpot!" He exclaimed, quickly running up to each of them, giving them a good look for any possible booby traps. "Wonder what these are exactly..." He murmured before yanking, what looked like, a giant family crest off of the wall. He quickly made his way to the next emblem and yanked it off the wall next. On the far side of the stone chamber he saw a desk; without another thought he darted over to it, hoping to find chests behind it. He was disappointed to find nothing there, so instead he began searching the cabinets in hopes of finding keys or clues as to where more of these heirlooms may be.

Inside the desk he found a key with a curious tag on it. "Magic heirlooms...?" Colm read with a hint of excitement in his voice. He quickly pulled the key from the drawer and began looking around the room for any other chests he may have missed. After a moment of searching he let out a sigh of defeat. He figured that the heirlooms probably weren't hidden in this room; they were probably elsewhere in the castle or possibly hidden in a treasure vault below. However, the last thing he noticed on the desk before looking away was a bottom drawer that had a keyhole. Desperate to see what these "magical heirlooms" were, he shoved the key into the hole and turned it. A beaming smile grew on his face when he heard the tumbler shift and drawer open.

Inside the drawer was two small rings that vaguely resembled Guiding Rings; one was a dark blue-ish color while the other was a dark red. Beneath the rings was a parchment with large text on it. Colm fished the two rings and parchment then threw them onto the desk in front of him. Before taking a close look at the rings, he read over the parchment:

Family Heirlooms: the Gleipnir and Garm rings. These rings hold unusual magical powers; rather than boosting the users capabilities, it changes their size. The blue ring, Glepinir Ring, will shrink either shrink the user quickly or slowly through the use of the follow chants. The red ring, Garm Ring, will cause the user to grow quickly or slowly by using the same chants. It should be noted that these rings should only be used when the wearer has both rings with them. This way the effects can be counteracted and will not be permanent.

Colm was stunned by what he found. This could potentially change the tide of the war for them should they give the Garm Ring to one of the more powerful members of their team. On the other hand, this could be useful for his own practice; if he handed it over now he'd probably never get them back.

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. He decides to hand it over to Ephraim.

2. Finders Keepers

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
