Felix closed his eyes. he had a feeling that the amarok was only sniffing him, because it was wondering what he was and judging whether he was edible or not. He had no doubt in his mind that once the amarok was done sniffing him, it would eat him. What else would such a creature do with humans. It was a giant wolf that more than likely eats humans. It is a mind-less beast that just so happens to be a carnivore after all. With it being just a cub, it might even be worse. Cubs know little about the world and this creature probably would only see Felix as a tasty treat and nothing more. Felix felt as though he was doomed and nothing could save him.
Suddenly, Felix felt something large and wet drag across his chest and face. The object felt strange to Felix due to its largeness, but Felix knew that it was the amarok's tongue. The amarok was surely tasting him and continuing to judge whether it should eat Felix or not. The tongue continued to lick Felix and when the tongue began to lick more rapidly, Felix thought that the amarok had grown fond of Felix's taste. "This it is," Felix thought to himself, "The amarok likes my taste now. It's not going to give me up. I'm going to be eaten and there's nothing I can do about it." Felix closed his eyes tighter. Felix shook with fear and a few tears were beginning to fall down. The tongue stopped its constant barrage of licks. Felix tensed up, knowing it was the end for him. However, that's not exactly what happened.
Before the jaws of the wolf could clamp down on him, Felix heard a high pitched whimper. Felix opened his eyes and could only see the massive pup's head filling his view. This startled Felix and he dragged himself backward a little. The pup didn't try to stop him, like Felix thought would happen. Instead, the pup let out another whine. Felix stared at the amarok pup, and was very confused. He examined the amarok's face and sure enough, it actually looked sad, completely with the irresistible puppy dog eyes. "The amarok is sad? But why is it sad?" Felix wondered, "What does it want from me? I thought it was going to eat me."
Felix just continued to stare at the large infant amarok who continued to whine and give Felix the sad puppy dog face. "It shouldn't be sad. I has me as a meal. Sure it's just been captured and it's far from its home most likely, but it's just an animal. Could it really understand such things?" Felix wondered.
The amarok took a step towards Felix and Felix had to take a few crawls back to cover the same distance covered by the amarok's leg to keep the same distance from the infant that there was before the amarok took a step. The amarok whimpered in response. Staring into the amarok's eyes, Felix saw desperation and sadness. "Why has it become sadder when I backed away from it? It must want something else from me other than use me for its meal. If it simply wanted to eat me, it would just eat me and not become saddened about me backing away. What the hell does it want?" Felix questioned
Felix decided to think about all the facts to try and think of a conclusion. "This amarok is an infant and William's soldiers have taken this amarok against its will to use as a weapon. The amarok is probably far away from is family and also homesick as well. Maybe even animals can feel that way. And infants need love and care from their family, especially the animals that care for their young. I'm sure the soldiers didn't treat the amarok too well," Felix thought.
Then it suddenly hit him. "Could the amarok want comfort from me?" Felix wondered, "That would explain why it's sadder when I back away and when I'm afraid of it, but why would an animal want comfort from something that's a different species and prey sized? Is it just because its an infant and desperate? If this is all true, then maybe I can make it out of this alive. If I can give comfort to this amarok, it will see me as being more useful to it other than being its meal. Maybe I can befriend this creature. If I can, it will make my job much easier."
Knowing that he didn't have any other options except to give it a try. Felix sat straight up and he reached out his hand. Felix did this slowly, and the amarok's eyes were transfixed on Felix's hands. Felix gulped and hoped that the amarok wasn't planing on biting his hand, which would probably take off nearly his entire arm. When Felix's arm was nearly straightened out, the amarok began stretching out its head. Felix became frightened and back his hand away, which caused the amarok to pause and whimper. After a few moments, Felix began reaching out again and the amarok did the same.
Eventually, the skin on Felix's palm came into contact with the black, soft fur on the infant amarok's muzzle. Felix saw the amarok's eyes close and it let out what sounded like a sigh. Felix was in shock. He couldn't believe he was actually touching an amarok and it was allowing him to do so. Sure the amarok was an infant and adult amaroks were larger and more intimidating, the infant was still the largest creature Felix had ever seen. Felix noticed that the amarok looked as though it might back away. So Felix snapped out of his shock and began stroking the fur on the amarok's muzzle. It was clear the amarok liked this as its tail wagged , like a domestic dog. However, this was not domesticated dog. It was a wild animal, a wolf, and Felix still needed to be careful.
Felix stood up and the amarok laid down on its belly. Felix walked to the side of the amarok's head which was probably larger than Felix's body. Felix tried petting and scratching the top of the amarok's head and its large ears. The amarok's reaction was leaning it's head against Felix. It didn't know its own strength and pushed Felix back a bit, but other than that, did not harm Felix. Felix pet under the amarok's neck with one hand and the top of the head with the other. The amarok rubbed its head against Felix as if trying to nuzzle him. The amarok was clearly happy with Felix's actions."I guess you're not going to eat me, are you?" Felix let out a relieved laugh. The amarok just continued to gratefully thank Felix by rubbing its head against him.
"If you like this, I think I know something else you love," Felix said as he pushed away from the amarok's head and walked to the amarok's side. The amarok whined and looked at Felix with confusion. "Relax, I'm not leaving," Felix tried assuring the amarok, but he didn't know if it could understand him. If he were to guess, he would guess that it didn't. Felix crouched down and put his hand under the amarok and started scratching its underbelly. The giant wolf pup's tail wagged faster than Felix had ever seen and looked like a blur. The amarok turned on its side for Felix and Felix was able to scratch more of the underbelly. The underbelly's fur was the same black as the rest of the amarok, but much softer. The only white fur the wolf had was a small tuft of white fur on the chest area. Felix looked at the amarok's head and saw its muzzle opened and it tongue sticking out with pleasure. "I hope I made a friend," Felix thought.
Felix then began to wonder if the amarok was a male or a female. It the amaroks were anything like gray wolves, then black furred wolves were males. Felix looked to his left and saw that the wolf was... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
