"The beast is a sphinx," Lord William said. "I'm sure you already know what it is: the body of a lion, but with the waist-up of a human sprouting from its shoulders. Sphinxes are regal and proud, and capable of some magic. This one should prove a strong force for me."

After he spoke, Felix was led to the sphinxes' cell. He entered it, watched by two guards, and looked around for the beast. He saw it lying towards the back of the cell. It was lying on its side and had its back to him, so its face was concealed, but he could tell it had....
