"That I have given you this, my lady." Another flash of teeth and spread lips, false warmth in his brown, almondine eyes. Before Fia could react, however, Kelos had already draped the ornament over her head and around her neck. The golden chain felt cool against her warm, bare skin, and the sapphire gem set in the pendant seemed to glow with an ethereal light.
"Wh--" she protested, wrapping her fingers around the gem, feeling it warm of its own accord. Desperately, Fia tried to remove the pendant, but it would not come off.
Kelos laughed, taking her hands in his and holding them still. "I think it looks lovely on you, especially in this dress." He turned, leading her back the other way, towards the banquet hall. "It will have everyone's eyes at dinner."
Fia shook her head, trying to make sense of the scene that just took place. "I--well, why--oh, I--" she blustered.
"You must be taken with it then." Kelos smiled even broader, but, as Fia watched him, he did not seem so appaling after all. Why, Kelos seemed as courteous as he was handsome. "It is a simple token of my gratitude for allowing me to stay here in Traeven."
She made one last attempt to speak, but heeded him when Kelos put a finger to her lips. "The real surprise will come later tonight, after sunset."
