Please Feed The Animals

Nala's nose started working before the rest of her body did as the all too familiar scent of fresh meat filled the air. Almost instictively she dragged her semi-concious body over to eat it. Several bites in she opened her eyes and took in the sights around her. The first thing she noticed was the meat she was eating. It was obvious by the taste it was hippo meat, but it was neatly sliced into slabs. It was a strange thing for her to see, but not at all displeasing. It made it easy to eat and made each bite as flavorful as the last.
By the time she finished the stack of meat before her she craned her head around to get a better look at her surroundings. There was a strange stickly creature nearby, a human. Nala was considering eating him at first, but he had a friendly smell on him and didn't look very fatty. Also, at her current size it'd be more work than it was worth to catch and eat him. The man wrote down some notes and quickly walked over to a container. He carried it over to Nala and placed it a short distance from her. Far enough away from her so she wouldn't have trouble reaching it, but within his comfort level since she was still a wild animal. Nala quickly realized it was filled with more hippo meat and dove in, greedily eating it all. The human continued taking notes.
The human, Professor Smith, had come here to research the animals in the area. He was trying to prove what others considered his "crackpot" theory that the animals in the area, not just one species, but them all as one large community live in a society similar to humans with lions at the top of the hierarchy. His research ran into trouble the other day when some poachers showed up and attacked some hippos. They were apprehended, though the hippos they killed were left to rot. At least he thought they would until he found this mighty lioness sleeping right on his porch. He had to climb out a window to avoid waking her and decided this lioness might prove useful research material. Though he never seen a lioness as large as her before he hypothesized that she was possibly the leader of the lion pack and as such was the best few. Smith decided to offer her some food to gain her trust so she would lead him back to her so he could observe the lions more closely.
Nala licked up the last traces of meat juice from the container and turned back to Smith eager for more. He didn't dissapoint her as there was plenty more where that came from.
"Boy, you sure are a hungry girl," he said cautiously getting closer to her. He gave her a soft pat as she started to scarf down the meat again. "I wonder how long it took you to get this big. Months, perhaps years. I wonder if the other lions are as big as you."
Nala didn't understand a word he said as she ate. All she was concerned about was eating and wondering how much more he was going to give her.
